Don’t be afraid of the cybermetrics. It tells us a lot of interesting shit. Pitch values, for instance.

Fastball: 5.0 (2018), 3.7 (2017)
Pitch Representation: 60%

That’s a good fastball. Not great, but he’s inducing a lot of weak contact because guys aren’t sizing it up too well.

Slider: 1.3 (2018), -0.1 (2017)
Pitch Representation: 20%

It’s a major league slider, and he’s getting better with it, but it’s barely above average.

Changeup: -2.4 (2018), -3.7 (2017)
Pitch Representation: 15%

Below average, but not heinous.

He throws a curveball 5% of the time, not much to talk about there.

Overall, he’s a better pitcher than he was last year, but not by much. He does not have an effective 3rd pitch, which is an absolute necessity. And his #2 pitch isn’t all that exciting.

Let’s hope for continued improvement on his secondary pitches.
