That play today was dirty. The catcher had no way to defend himself. He clipped the dude.

I do not see how the slide today was dirty. He slide into the plate. He did not go out of his way to hit anyone. He did not raise his feet up.

He slid toward the first base side of the plate with intention of taking out the catcher.

Yeah I’m not so sure on that one. Just saw he replay . He had the whole backside of he plate to slide into and went towards he catcher / first base line instead . I haven’t noticed if he usually slides that direction usually or not . Seems like he could’ve avoided that .

He is attempting to break up a double play which is still allowed.

I don't think he is a dirty player, but this was a dirty play.

Just to be clear, I, Jbi11s, am agreeing with Badrogue17.

The umpire standing right there did not think it was dirty.

The review did not think it was dirty.

Pirates players said they did not think it was dirty.

How much more is needed?

Of course you don't. If it was a Pirates player sliding into Conetreras you would see it different.

Jbills is correct.

A straight up old school baseball play allowed by the rules, passed inspection, got a couple runs in and nothing to see here.

There would be 5 threads already if Contreras took that slide without warning.

Maddon would be losing his shit post game.

 And if it was the other way around you would be saying it was completely fine.

Nice try.

His feet are on the ground. He is within a reaching distance of the plate. It is a double play.

But I do agree with you on one thing...you are a stupid old bastard.

I thought the rules were changed on breaking up a double play? I was surprised they cleared him on the replay.

When sliding into a base in an attempt to break up a double play, a runner has to make a "bona fide slide." Such is defined as the runner making contact with the ground before reaching the base, being able to reach the base with a hand or foot, being able to remain on the base at the completion of the slide (except at home plate) and not changing his path for the purpose of initiating contact with a fielder. The slide rule prohibits runners from using a "roll block" or attempting to initiate contact with the fielder by elevating and kicking his leg above the fielder's knee, throwing his arm or his upper body or grabbing the fielder. When a violation of the slide rule occurs, the offending runner and the batter-runner will be called out.

I don’t recall if he changed his path. They cleared him, so I assume he didn’t. But look at that graphic, I wouldn’t want someone sliding into my leg that way with no chance to defend myself. Dirty play regardless if it’s legal.

It is a baseball play. You are supposed to try and break up a double play.

If it solely a play at the plate that I would understand more of what you are saying.

What's the big deal if it is a dirty play? Rizzo isn't a bad guy. We know this.

Here's the rule dumbass

Rule 7.13 Comment: The failure by the runner to make an effort to touch the plate, the runner’s lowering of the shoulder, or the runner’s pushing through with his hands, elbows or arms, would support a determination that the runner deviated from the pathway in order to initiate contact with the catcher in violation of Rule 7.13. If the runner slides into the plate in an appropriate manner, he shall not be adjudged to have violated Rule 7.13. A slide shall be deemed appropriate, in the case of a feet first slide, if the runner’s buttocks and legs should hit the ground before contact with the catcher. In the case of a head first slide, a runner shall be deemed to have slid appropriately if his body should hit the ground before contact with the catcher.
(2) Unless the catcher is in possession of the ball, the catcher cannot block the pathway of the runner as he is attempting to score. If, in the judgment of the Umpire, the catcher without possession of the ball blocks the pathway of the runner, the Umpire shall call or signal the runner safe.
