The slide is still 100% legal if you go word for word by the rule book. If they don't want home plate collisions than you have to change the rules and any contact with a catcher is interference/out.

When sliding into a base in an attempt to break up a double play, a runner has to make a "bona fide slide." Such is defined as

1. the runner making contact with the ground before reaching the base,
2. being able to reach the base with a hand or foot,
3. being able to remain on the base at the completion of the slide (except at home plate)
4. and not changing his path for the purpose of initiating contact with a fielder.

Violating any one of those would mean interference. Rizzo was good on 1 through 3. The question was #4, and it was a judgment call.

Figured that was coming. My point all along.....and Jaw is right, #4 is the problem with the slide.

Illegal does not equal dirty.

It's clear what MLB wants, just make the run that no sliding player is allowed to make contact with a defender.

C'mon Don. You can't call people dopes because "MLB knows better" and then still stay entrenched when MLB says it was wrong. I guess you know better than MLB?

Lots of dopes in this thread. None of them on the "not a dirty play" side. Props to Cub fans like denis and 312 who saw what should have been obvious to everyone.

I’ll tell you this- having a son out there playing sports makes me sensitive to these pro athletes that go out of their way to clip defenseless players. You see the goons in hockey do this all the time. And when I see a guy hit someone’s knee from the backside, it makes me grimace. And honestly, I don’t even care about the technical legality of it. It’s akin to a sucker punch to me.

That's all well and good and reasonable insofar as your kids are concerned ... you're a good cat for that ... doesn't mean shit to a tree as to the reality of the play though.

Speaking of ...

It was illegal, and if it happened to Contreras you'd be screaming bloody murder.

Something seems off here. MLB acknowledged it was illegal but went out of it's way to clarify it wasn't "dirty"? Hard to believe.

Anyway, Rizzo clearly changed the direction he was headed, which clearly makes it a violation of the 4th part of that rule. There's not much to debate here, but I know that's never stopped us before.

It’s cause Rizzo’s a nice guy. If that was Baez or some other hot head, I think folks might look at it differently. The slide at best was borderline in terms of the rules. It was definitely intentional, as Rizzo admits. It was against a defenseless player. And it was at a part of the body prone to injury. That is why my original opinion on page was is that the slide was dirty. But it’s my opinion, and I am overly sensitive to these things.
