I liked the show when spmack's girl was hosting.

New girl not so much.

I may watch again.

Agreed. De Orio was too nice and the guests in turn were then too nice. The show is best when there is disagreement about or even hatred for someone's selection. Alpana has a little nasty edge to her that helps drive the show.

Catherine did okay but I am an Alpana fan as well.

Missed her while she was away.

Glad she's back.

I always thought that it was strange that in the best of shows, Alpana was being featured more and more.

Welcome back. The new chick was kind of empty imo

Great news!

this gives me the feels in a complete opposite way than when Depaul brought back Dave Leito.

Amanda Puck was still the best. I liked Alpana better than the current woman. It doesn't seem like a return is a testament to post show success for Singh.

I agree with all of this.

I always liked Amanda Puck. Alpana was good, too. But I always felt she could barely hold back her disdain for everyone at the table with her and their ignorance to the industry - which isn't a criticism. It made for a more interesting watch.

I'd rank them -

Amanda, Alpana, and this Vincent D'Onofrio.

I don't remember Amanda Puck's tenure. I did respect that Alpana seemed to read the "Stu Wilson thinks you'll say 'cheese and thank you' to his fondue recommendation"-type puns through gritted teeth

I think they should have a dating show where a geek type guy goes out with 3 attractive women and reviews that: Bitch,Please!

All three hosts of this show have sucked. Even James Van Osdol could--based on his "Car con Carne" podcast--do a better job steering the discussion in an interesting direction. And that's setting the bar pretty low.

She is a primary partner of two upscale and well-reviewed restaurants - at least one of which has been open for 6 years. Of course it's the restaurant business so who knows.

Not the primary partner in terms of money and return for that money. Her value is in being a local food celeb, which she hasn't kept up since leaving the show

http://www.chicagotribune.com/dining/ct-food-alpana-singh-leaves-seven-lions-1025-story.html
Restaurateur and master sommelier Alpana Singh has sold her interest in Seven Lions (130 S. Michigan Ave.).

In a story first reported by Crain’s Chicago Business, Singh’s stake was purchased by business partner John Ward, who will continue to operate the Loop restaurant.

“I don’t anticipate him changing anything,” Singh said. “Really, (the restaurant) is better than ever; I’m very proud of what we’ve done here.”

Singh, who owns Boarding House restaurant in River North and Terra & Vine in downtown Evanston, came very close to stepping away from the restaurant scene entirely. Singh considered running for the Cook County Board of Commissioners, only to pull back days before the filing deadline.

Max & Benny's featured in next week's episode.

Meet Bruce Levine at Mandel Bread Drive and Sugar Cookie Lane.

Love it that Alpana is back. She's terrific.

If some show is giving you unfettered ability to try any restaurant on their dime, what kind of fool chooses a deli?

Does Check, Please! pay for the meal? I never got that sense.

It's PBS. They don't have any money. Believe me.

My favorite episode is the one where the fat old guy tries to white knight for the babe when the gay guy opines that the restaurant she chose served shitty calamari.

They have to kick in. In the past they've had places with prix fixe menus ranging between $150 - $300 per diner.

There has to be some kind of threshold for reimbursement at a minimum.

There was a diner this weekend who I couldn't help but think was your metrosexual cousin. And of course he picked a spot just west of Fulton Market that was really quirky looking, with a dining room dominated by original artwork.

Strangely the only memorable food was venison.

My guess is a producer calls the restaurant in advance and sets up a blind free meal for the guests and camera interviews.

Had a couple in the restaurant last Sunday from Forest Park. Only about 5 miles from us, not a terrible distance, but I did ask them what prompted the trip. Turns out they play a game where one pick a number between 1 and 15, and the other number between 1 and 18 (not sure about these numbers, but for the purposes of this story.) The first number is the season and the second number is the episode. They will then look up that episode and visit whatever restaurant makes the most sense for them.

I know. White people.

They call you and let you know you are in consideration, and ask if you are ok with that. After that you do not hear from them again until after the diners have eaten there. You never know who they are, and the restaurant doesn't comp anything.
