Sounds like a good idea. Have they heard these women speak when given the chance ?

Goodbye beauty, hello brains - the Miss America pageant is getting a makeover.

Miss America has decided to cut its swimsuit competition, adding that it will no longer judge contestants based on their physical appearance.

"We are no longer a pageant," Gretchen Carlson, the chair of the Board of Trustees for the Miss America Organization, said Tuesday morning on Good Morning America. "We are a competition."

The sweeping changes to the competition come after the #MeToo movement and aim to help the organization be more inclusive and empowering for all women, ABC News reports.

Branding the competition on "Miss America 2.0," Carlson hopes it will resonate with more young people.

Rather than strut their stuff, the women will be asked to provide their passion.

In a live session with the judges, the contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia will be asked to demonstrate their passion, intelligence, and an overall understanding of the job of Miss America.

Taking women's empowerment one step further, the organization is also getting rid of the evening gown portion.

Instead, hopeful queens will be asked to wear what makes them feel confident, expresses their personal style, and shows how they hope to advance the role of Miss America.

"We're no longer judging women when they come out in their chosen attire, their evening wear, whatever they choose to do it's going to be what comes out of their mouth that we're interested in when they talk about their social impact initiative," Carlson said.

The radical change stemmed from a controversy earlier this year when internal emails were released from the group's former CEO Sam Haskell.

In the leaked emails, Haskell and others insulted the appearance, intellect, and personal lives of former pageant winners, including Carlson.

The former Miss America has more recently been an outspoken advocate for victims of sexual harassment and a champion of the #MeToo movement.

And Carlson hopes contestants bring their own passion to the competition this year.

"We want to be inclusive to women who may not feel comfortable participating in our program before, but look, we have always had talent and scholarship, and we need to message that part of the program better as well but now we're adding in this new category where we're not going to judge you on your outward appearance because we're interested in what makes you, you."

If you want to see a bunch of homely intelligent women, just drive down to Purdue University.

This is why feminism is needed.

Even you have to admit there is a lot of truth in the former.

They should ask the contestants questions like this; If you were Miss America, and the U.S. was on the brink of a nuclear war, and the only way the conflict could be averted was if you agreed to sleep with the enemy's leader, what would you do?

They're all gonna wear sweatpants and talk about their vaginas and watching Netflix with their cats. Progress.

I can’t help but completely disagree with this latest development... but I’d more so, like to address all the assuming and judgmental comments that have followed. Wow...
I can understand that there are a lot of pro/con views when it comes to pageantry. And that’s fine... Pageantry is absolutely not for everyone. But neither is expressing your self through dance, or sports or art. Pageantry is a choice. No one is forcing to you partake or even watch... But I can tell you that I have never felt more proud of myself than when I meet a fitness goal that I’ve worked extremely hard towards.
I’ve never felt more graceful than when I get to step across the stage in an beautiful evening gown taking a few moments away from my messy clothes and my messy mom bun.
I have never felt more powerful then when I get to speak my truth, on an international stage and to people all over the world, about my passion and all the things that I am actively working towards changing in this world.
Competing in a pageant is exciting, empowering and I can assure you I have never once felt degraded.

There are many platforms that people choose to make a difference, and I choose to do it through pageantry. The fact that I wear a swimsuit or fitness wear in my case, or a beaded dress, absolutely shouldn’t take away from the heart and the desire that I have to make a difference in this world.
I feel by taking certain portions out of a competition, you are saying that a woman can’t be beautiful and intelligent in this “new” world... it’s saying “be careful what you wear- or people may think x, y and z of you.”

I think the fact that a woman chooses to make a difference for her cause, community, country in anyway she wants, is what makes her beautiful ... and powerful.
It shouldn’t matter how we choose to be heard- all that matters is that we are doing something.

Nice to see that Gretchen Carlson has resurfaced after FoxNews. Fitting vocation for her now though.
