Was watching the simulcast of Dan Lebatard with Stugotz this morning at the gym, and they had Bob Ryan on the phone.

They were discussing players from older eras playing in the NBA.

Bob was asked if Bob Cousy could play in today's NBA. He said no.

He also said he could put together a team of guys from the 50s and 60s that would do very well in today's NBA. He was using the availability of strength and conditioning argument you guys like to use.

Seemed like everyone on the show was laughing at Ryan's thoughts. Then he got defensive and said Bill Russell would lead the league in rebounding and blocked shots right now.

Lebatard ended the segment, and then later on everyone was clowning on Ryan's thoughts. Dan was wondering exactly how Russell would lead the league in rebounding and blocked shots at 6'9" 220lbs, or how he would try to defend Kevin Durant.

Btw, Lebatard and Stugotz are maybe my fav sports talk show because they don't take things that serious, the show moves fast, they poke the ESPN overlords from time to time, and they mix up the topics while still having fun. Plus Lebatard is admittedly against the embrace debate trend.

Didn't Barkely win a rebounding title at 6'6? Russel played against possibly the greatest offensive player in the history of the game. I think he'd be fine defending the great Draymond Green.

I've heard that Barkley wasn't even 6'6". And Dennis Rodman was definitely not his listed 6'8". He was also probably 6'6" and might be the best rebounder ever.

Rodman, Russell and Barkley had great GUAGI skills.

Is prime Russell or Rodman shutting down Lebron or Durant?

I don't think so.

If it was a white vs. black argument, and you took the black guy that would be considered progress.

Bill Russell would eat 99% of today’s NBA pussies for lunch.

I would love to see Rodman be able to guard Lebron. That would be a thing. Rodman would play so many head games with him.

He wouldnt shut him down, but I would guess he could contain him for periods.

Bill Russell was 6'9" 5/8 barefoot so in today's game where players are listed at their in shoes height Russell would probably be listed at 6'11". He also had a 7'4" wingspan and was a high jumper, he was a freak athlete. Anyone belittling Russell's talent and claiming he would not be a great player in this era is foolish.

So he'd be like a little bit better Joakim Noah?

Well he was much more coordinated and athletic than Noah so I think he would be considerably better. He also wasn't nearly as brittle as Noah has been.

Yes.

Yeah, he'd be a defensive dynamo, and maybe a rebound champion a couple times. That's about it.

He'd probably be on the all defensive 1st team every season and win the rebounding championship every single year. Russell and Chamberlain's talents transcend eras.

A better Ben Wallace? I'll take it.

That's total bullshit. One of Horford's biggest weaknesses is rebounding and Russell is one of the three greatest rebounders of all time along with Rodman and Chamberlain. Awful comparison.

Heeeeey, that Ron Artest? Good player, but he doesn't play much defense.

the avg player height in the nba became 6'7 in the eighties (was 6'5 in the 50's and 6'6 in the 60's and 70's) and has stayed that all the way to today.

avg weight also hit 220 in the 80's and has ALSO pretty much stayed the same.

it was different in the 60's but not THAT different. avgs in the 60's was 6'6" and 200. today its 6'7 and 220.

put the training on those guys and they are as good as these guys.

Yeah, I just don't see it.

Would be nice to have a HoF level rebounder in today's game tho.
