Bottom line is he did his job, pitched well and gave his team a chance to win - which they did with the walk off bomb by Heyward.

If Q is who the Cubs think he is, then there is no way a manager has that quick of a hook with the guy. I guarantee Maddon doesn't pull Lester or Hendricks (or Jake last year) in a similar situation.

Yeah for the “he pulls pitchers too early crowd, last night was more of a “ I better get this guy out before he totally implodes as I’ve seen this movie before “ move

He used to do it with Hendricks (Almost cost them a World Series) but I agree. Not a good feeling when you know that your manager doesn't have any confidence in you.

He still does it, with Hendricks and others.

Nothing pisses me off more than that move. "Let's bring Lester in during the middle of an inning with a guy on base."

How about leaving Chapman in to pitch the 9th in game 6 of the World Series after he had pitched the 8th and then the Cubs extended the lead to 6 runs? No sense in resting him in that 9th inning, so he would be more capable in the deciding game of the World Series. :?

Could NOT be more wrong if you tried.

And I agree with the larger thing on Quintana. Joe is the fastest hook in the West.

Joe would pull Steve Nebraska after his 78th pitch.

Exactly. Terrible thought. Joe has pulled Hendricks how many times when he should not have?

Joe pulls pitchers too early all around, has nothing to do with Q.

Back to hard luck Q tonight. Gives up zip through 5, gives up 2 hits and the bullpen allows them to score in the 6th while the offense scores nothing.

Just needs to throw a shutout each start and solve the 8 LOB from last night. Problem solved

Or pitch better against a weaker offense than the guy he is facing who is pitching against a stronger one. What you're really describing is a pitcher who simply isn't as good as the pitchers he faces, right?

It’s amazing how often that’s happened to poor Q over almost 200 career starts

It's the terrible White Sox offense.

63-62 for his career.

6-5 on the season.

Funny how that works.

Last I checked, baseball was a team sport. Q did his part, his teammates did not. Some nights his teammates pick him up, but more often then not, they do not and he ends up with the L.

Nope.

James Shields is 140-131 for his career.

Sad to see a Cubs fan so worked up about the White Sox he is posting about their prospects in a Quintana thread.

So now it's not the "terrible White Sox offense" anymore, it's just a permanent condition of unluckiness that surrounds Jose Quintana whether he's on the lowly White Sox or the Mighty Cubs? Sounds like that wouldn't be a guy you'd want on your team.

Impossible. "Run support" doesn't exist.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Run_support

Quote:
Run support is the number of runs a team scores when a given starting pitcher is on the mound. Over the long run, there should be little difference between pitchers in this category, but from year to year, the number can vary significantly, and even members of the same starting rotation can have very different numbers, which can range between less than two runs per game at the low end, to six or more at the high end. It is obviously very difficult for a starting pitcher to post a winning record with low run support, no matter how well he pitches, while a high run support can make a pitcher a big winner in spite of otherwise poor statistics.

Run support is considered to be largely a result of luck, even though to a small extent, a good-hitting pitcher can contribute to his own run support. This is why it is expected that a pitcher who has benefited from particularly good or poor run support in one season will revert towards the mean the next year, other factors being equal. Some pitchers do seem to escape this rule, but they are merely outliers: for example, Brian Meadows had outstanding run support for a number of years, giving him high win totals in spite of mediocre pitching, while on the other end, Jose Quintana has been notorious for having poor run support year after year.
