It’s not black and white. Sometimes I think about people who do this that still have a mom and/or dad around. What a terrible thing for a parent to go through, no matter the age of their kid. I imagine a parent battles with questions (fairly or unfairly) such as “could I have done something different” for the rest of their life — hopefully coming to peace with time. I could never do that to my parents, no matter how tough or bad things are. A word that comes to mind is “unfair.” It would be unfair to them.

The other side (people who do this that have a child) is just as sad. I think of “betrayal.”

Every family’s situation and its relationships are obviously unique. This just sucks.

A lot of you guys are using the word 'selfish' as some kind of taboo pejorative.
I guess for some people, the last desperate act of self preservation is permanent self destruction.
I'm sad about Anthony Bourdain, because I liked his writing and his TV shows and now there won't be any new ones.
There won't be any new Frightened Rabbit or Nirvana music. Or Robin Williams movies.
There won't be any more fashion design by Kate Spade. Etc. Etc.
Ultimately, we're just as selfish because we don't get the answers we want, and no more product to consume.
It's a permanent solution to a temporary problem, but sometimes those problems fester to the point of no longer being temporary.
It just sucks.
