Didn't realize other drowning outcomes were possible.

From http://abc7chicago.com/sports/details-e ... r/3597689/

Quote:
...So far this year, 13 people have drowned to death in Orange County, three of them children under the age of 4, authorities said.

Comcast describes a recent show as a horror story caused by a "mammoth-sized whale" hitting a boat.

Also in the Trib today, we hear about "no ifs, ands, or butts."

I think "drowning" is the act of being suffocated by liquid, not necessarily to death.

I believe electrocution is the term that necessitates death by electric shock.

So you can drown and not die, but cannot be electrocuted and live.

That's interesting. According to the OED, the literal and intransitive meaning of drown is "(t)o suffer death by submersion in water; to perish by suffocation under water (or other liquid)." They say the same thing (i.e., it involves death) about electrocute. Whatevs....most people don't know the difference between jealous and envious....

That’s because people use jealous for instead of envious of in too many situations. In the end most will understand meaning via context however.

As did I . . . until about two years ago.

Doesn’t common usage come into play here though?

Let me add, I butcher things like this all the time. I remember learning this one years ago but I bet I’ve used jealous incorrectly. I can think of one time a neighbor used it wrong recently but even if it had occurred to me at the time I knew what he meant. Context can be so very important and helpful in these situations.

Yes. Only someone with control issues would correct you in speech or informal writing.

I’m more passive aggressive and just judge the person silently. Not really. I rarely pay attention to things like this unless it’s one of my kids.
