I would like to add that generally people would not be against strong sentences as a deterrent. That’s is if, and a big if, it would not ruin the rest of a persons life. There really isn’t a true policy of you did your time we are good now.

I believe that our prison system is seriously messed-up, over crowded, and the terms are too long. At the same time I don't know how someone can think that by 15 that a person should not know pointing a gun at someone and taking their car is super dangerous to all parties involved, and an activity that is likely to lead to someone being killed. I just want to drive fast should not include an armed confrontation. The number of times this is happening is also alarming.

I see that JBills included articles. I wonder what percent of 15 year old carjackers turn their lives around. Not many. I would guess that it's too late to get to them by that age. So we should try to identify behavior that leads to carjacking at an earlier age.

no one said they don't know it's wrong.

i was just wondering if there is a better solution or middle ground than either a) let them walk off as currently is being done, or b) lock them up for 15-20 years

I think for nearly every crime at that age it would be a better solution to monitor people, force them to work a job or attend school in another environment away pretty far away from home. If they are found with a gun during that they would be sent to prison. I would like to write in waivers for drugs and alcohol in my system, but we are not there yet as a society.

That's where I would lean to as well. Though, some prison time should be served as stole someone's car.

I used to think some time as well, but I've read a lot of prison accounts. It's some really haunting stuff. The lifers prey on the young kids entering the prison system. If they are not already so messed up by life that time in prison might make their ascent into career criminal complete.

I don't know what the answer is, but we put way too many people into cages for too long. I don't think it prepares them to re-enter society in the least.

I'm glad we can agree that at least "some" prison time is warranted for violently robbing someone with a firearm.

No way anyone should serve less than 8 years in the booty house with another 10 years of probation for that. None of this 6 months served and monitoring for another 12 bullshit. This is armed felonious activity were talking about here, and some people are more worried about the life of the felon than the safety of innocent people living in society.

i wish i knew what planet you were harvested from.

So you consider harsh punishment for robbing people for their vehicles at gunpoint—a violent felony committed with a weapon—to be an alien concept?

Stop saying "middle ground", what's your solution? I said at least 8 years and a decade of probation, what do you have?

Yeah it’s not like the car robbery is necessary to feed oneself.

Jesus fucking Christ, there's more "well, how will the criminal deal with prison after robbing someone at gunpoint?" talk from these morons than concern for the people who had or could have the gun shoved in their face.

It's really easy to say "well we don't want to screw someone up for life". And you know what that gets society? Shomari Legghette.

So this ends when we all agree with you?

We've got two bougie wannabes from Orlando and Arlington Heights in here lecturing us on how they have this grand social engineering scheme figured out, and lest you think they were soft on crime(!) they do acknowledge that for carjacking someone with a gun there should probably be some (how much? not provided) prison involved.

It isn't enough to agree more prison time is necessary?

This is getting awkward.

Any prison time would be necessary.

I think everyone for the last two pages has agreed on this.

When you start trying to put exact years on it then you lose me.

yea, i'd be totally cool if someone took my car provided it was just for a joyride

High speed chase from Palantine to the city ends in a crash: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/loca ... story.html

Part of a weekend where 40 people are shot: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/loca ... story.html

Wonder what the stats were for Liberty City last weekend.

could probably make a great chicago GTA game, using real life as the story... if they follow the GTA V theme of multiple characters/storylines you could have a teen from englewood, rahm emmanuel, and someone from boystown as the 3 main characters.
