Fuck golf.
hear hear! for all of the bearded new balance rocking bike riders who wanna guilt trip you into liking the MLS, i figure there's more people like me who gave "the beautiful game" a chance years back and put in the effort to go through ~6 months of the abstract where i had no idea what was going on and it seemed like a bunch of european/south-american manlets having a kickabout.
but once you compel yourself to break through that abstract of less scoring and you start to figure out what's happening and why (not to mention who the guys are) i can vouch that the game itself is proper in that the lack of scoring tends to add emphasis to the actual scoring. there's a proper ebb and flow to a game where it's a damn near perpetual buildup to some kind of wonderful release where on a mere deflection/header/tap-in seemingly out of nowhere you can go from prolonged agony/frustration to total release singing/chanting "FOOTBALL'S COMING HOME!" when, say, harry kane gets a header in stoppage time to put england ahead of tunisia in the final 2-3 minutes of the game. that's the beauty of the beautiful game.... you often gotta wait for that release to come, even tho sometimes it doesn't come (or it goes into a negative "why did i waste my time with this?" way that's a core tenet of "c'est la arsenal" =)
that said, i can totally do without the bearded new balanced bike riders who hear that you like european soccer/football and think you oughta support local/MLS stuff. i always say "if i wanna hear rap i'm not gonna go to poland for mc maciej... i'm gonna go with american rap. when i'm gonna fuck with football i'm gonna fuck with the places/leagues where football matters, and that tends to be europe"
plus the time difference works out great when you've got weekends to wake up and consume a few games starting right when you wake up and then by like 3-4pm you've consumed a whole day of sport. that's why i got into soccer in the first place.... when i'd be up early on saturday mornings and FX stopped showing buffy re-runs there was often a premier league saturday matinee game on ESPN2 so i decided that i was gonna dive into it and figure it out.... and i'm glad i did, even tho i've told quite a few people over the last couple'a years that arsenal fandom is my cross to bear. this is what happens, donnie, this is what happens when you first fall in love with a team that lost 0-1 @ norwich city to a goal by grant FUCKING holt. #urgency #handbrake talk during the #halftimeanalysis
