So I watched Ace Ventura after not having seen in quite some time. I recorded it off the Freeform channel (formerly the ABC Family network) and it wasn’t a shock to find that they edited practically the entire scene where Jim Carrey is trying to cleanse himself after finding out that Einhorn is actually Ray Finkle. Of course, it’s one of the best scenes in the movie, and it’s all tied together perfectly to a soundtrack of Boy George’s “The Crying Game”. They also edited out the scene where the cops, Dan Marino, etc start puking after they see Einhorn’s penis.

I went to YouTube to watch the unedited footage for both scenes and the comment sections are being infiltrated by people like Julie DiCaro. They’re shocked that something so transphobic/homophobic could have been made in the first place.

I was 15 years old when this movie came out in 1993, and for the life of me, I can’t remember any outrage whatsoever. I’m pretty sure this was universally loved by young Generation Xers, homo or otherwise.

Am I a bad person? And I’ll concede that I have atrocious taste. For instance, I regard Freddy Got Fingered as a life-changing, comedic masterpiece.

We are of similar age (although, I found Freddy got Fingered to be terrible). I loved this movie too but watching it now I found it not as funny as I did then. Not because of the ____phobic humor (which in the context of the time we live in is not really funny to me anymore) but more that it is a really dated scene because it references a movie that was famous at the time but no one knows now.

Which actually makes me wonder how people would react to The Crying Game now...

It's similar to why Eddie Murphy's concert films are never referred to now, except to politely say that they haven't aged well. And at the end of the day it's a non-issue, if I want to see them unedited I can, just like the other movies.

I was actually going to reference the first fifteen minutes of Delirious. The Ice Cream bit still holds up as does the red leather suit.

So do the bits about his family. But I don't think his bit about taking an African wife in Raw would go far now

Just like the racist cartoons they should be shown unedited within reason. It does show how much things have changed for the better though.

I don’t care how PC the country gets, I will always unapologetically love Delirious and Raw.

Both are funny and have held up for me but I don't think he could have made them now if he did there'd be protests or people demanding an apology at least.

Yes, he would be crucified online if he performed those sets in 2018.

I thought he was an asshole then and I still do now. His buddy was pretty funny, though.

As far as the other discussion goes, I hope Blazing Saddles is never considered "problematic."

Fuck that. My parents thought Monty Python was sinful. Generations see things differently.

New generations do not always usher in progress, but sometimes they can (like with the racist cartoons BRick mentioned).

I think they would. People still reference the part about her taking half.

I think there were a lot of offended people back when they were released. Eddy was edgy, even on SNL.

I remember watching some of it with my grandma and she called him foul mouthed and made me turn it off.

Life of Brian was on the banned list in my house, which, of course, only made it more of an attraction to see. When I finally saw Monty Python comedy I didn't really enjoy it.

Censoring humor is not progress.

People who are offended by edgy comedy are the ones who should be offended in the first place.

Making fun of people and things should always be fair game. It doesn't involve fighting, politics, or money, and there is enough material for EVERYONE to be lampooned for something.

Getting back to the transphobic content, I think the scene in Bachelor Party still holds up great

we were just talking this morning at work how they released all the monty python material to Netflix in the UK and it will be on its way the US sometime this year.

While i think holy grail and life of brian are still funny, i haven't watched flying circus since i was in high school and wondered if A) the would censor some of the stuff (a la gender stuff in old bill nye and the above ace ventura) and B) if i'd find it even funny.

twitter folks need to go back through history and find every terrible thing that societies accepted as normal at the time... then we can just stop celebrating history altogether since it is all tainted. would eliminate classes at school. save money on less teachers needed.

Me too. I met one of the Red Rock "cowboys" at a baseball tournament in Harlingen Texas. His best scene was at the fart festival at the fire pit? NO MORE BEANS! Mel Brooks could make the best politically incorrect movies ever:)

Some of it is still funny, even though I've seen it enough to quote entire episodes. But what they did became the norm in many ways, so it loses something there, too. When I watch Life of Brian, I watch it now less for the laughs and more for the savage criticism.

The real test of if a person is funny, I think, is to see their work evolving. I watched a conversation on Youtube between Eric Idle and John Cleese from a few years back, and it was hysterical.

All the racial stuff in Python would be censored. "Never be rude to an Arab..." And all the blackface.

wtf, it wasnt depicting anti-homo shit... it was depicting what a heterosexual would think about being with another man. god this is stupid. you can have zero issue with gay men, but still be disgusted at the thought of even smelling another dude...

My God....the bits about his drunk Father....his Uncle Gus building the fire.....they are still hilarious.
I have a vinyl copy of Eddie Murphy: Comedian....my 18 yr old son was besides himself with the content, as well as it being the same as Donkey from Shrek.

The 2 Bill and Ted movies are some of the “nicest” movies ever made. The movies are full of positivity and even though B+T aren’t smart guys they always are presented genuinely and respectfully. Despite all these good vibes, there’s still a scene where they hug each other and then immediately call each other “fags.” It’s weird.
