they ran out of places to build new blue glass skyscrapers so now they're just gonna start plopping blue glass skyscrapers on top of whats already there.

there is no way in 50 years people are going to look at that abomination and think "wow I really like that top bit with the residential units". they may actually tear it all down well before it needs to out of embarrassment. RIP Wintrust Station.

Oh fuck me running is that a monstrosity. There's a lot that needs to be done to Union Station. Plopping condos onto it is not remotely one of them.

The railroads themselves are falling apart. The air on the platforms is probably toxic to breathe from all the diesel fumes because we still can't electrify our entire rail system. The layout is a complete shitshow where no one can wait in the waiting room because it's across the street so everyone just camps out on the concourse floor. The food court is a labyrinth. The solution, as always, is condos!

I imagine there are parts of city hall where everyone sits in a circle on their knees chanting "mixed-use residential".

I remember being pretty intrigued by the idea of dropping $1b into Union Station as some sort of precursor to a regional rail network. I wish I knew then that they really meant they were just going to add condos and retail. What a let down.

The cool/weird thing about Union Station is that there are all these areas that are boarded up or walled off that have been unused for years: restaurants and barber shops and lounges, all stuff that made sense when Union Station was a major passenger hub and not just a wedding venue. Open all that space back up and do cool stuff with that. And like Kamin says here, convert the upper office space to a hotel if you want. But plopping airbnbs on top of the place? Fuck off.

I've never used it so I don't know: is there anything going on at La Salle Street Station or is it just the platforms and that's it? If they ever get that Southeast Line to Steger up and running, maybe they could make that a decent public space again.

For $1bn they cant do anything innovative? It seems almost impossible for this to cost so much yet be so uninspired.

Somehow it cost $38MM to put that hideous Green Line station at Morgan/Lake. I guess now that was a bargain.

I knew you would come around to my thoughts on public transportation.

The station itself is a disaster...between the fumes, noise, rotting roof and concrete and the missing ceiling tiles, it’s like some Soviet-era depot. Compared to Ogilvie, Union Station is an embarrassment.

I was just in Union Station on Monday. I was excited to see they are putting money into the place until I saw where the money is going.

If you want a model of sensible redevelopment for a transportation center, look no further than Union Station in Denver. That place is happening on every level.

And let's also say that change is neither good nor bad, it simply is. It can be greeted with terror or joy, a tantrum that says "I want it the way it was," or a dance that says, Look, something new!" P.R. people understand this, but they can never execute it. If you don't like what is being said, then change the conversation.

Riding in on the MD West line, the tracks are very poor in many spots. The loading area for the trains have toxic fumes as stated above. There are many choke points in the loading areas. The majority of Union Stations screams, "get out as fast as you can". It's just unappealing. Riders won't benefit from the structure on top of it, so I'd say it's a low priority.

I witnessed the transformation in Denver first hand. It is quite remarkable what has been done in LoDo starting with Coors Field and finishing with their Union Station. The train line to the airport is top notch. I don't even have to rent a car anymore.

I take the train in 1-2 days per week. I've seen much of the renovation work being done to the great hall, but didn't realize they were going to do something this drastic.

Toxic fumes by the tracks is no joke. Some days are worse than others, but man...it's disgusting.

I think Soldier Field Part 2 is the perfect name.

The Berlin Hbf is an unbelievable achievement. Should be the model everywhere, they managed to completely revolutionize how stations should be designed.

Should be easy to convert the whole building once we replace public transportation with self driving cars too.

Imagine it as a music festival venue, headlined by the Chainsmokers.

Because they blew $400 million on a new bullshit "Positive Train Control" system to counteract their employees falling asleep at the switch.
