Owners are not subject wage and hour laws. They deserve to be in jail, but then we’d have to feed and clothe them.

I can't read the article so I can only go off the headline but who cares? There are restaurants everywhere in San Francisco.

Well, don't post an article behind a paywall then.

A better solution would be to reform the restrictive zoning laws to encourage new development to fill the several million housing unit shortage in California. The only thing that will lower housings costs there is an increase in the supply of housing available.

Yeah I actually think unless there is some artificial factor the prevailing wage should be higher there anyway. I recall back in the Boston area in the late 80's people got paid a ton to do all sorts of menial things due to the economy and COL. Servers I guess always seem to have the lower wage but my first glance did not show me whether these were previously tip jobs.

You mention this a lot but it really is their town and they should do what they want and live with their decisions. At least, that uis normally how you usually argue.

There is a ton of building going on there. Not every place should be Manhattan which is one skyscraper after another.

I'll defend NIMBYism in San Francisco. If people don't want a unique American city to be full to bursting with the adult dorms of modern condo buildings, I get that. Maybe people who want to work in Santa Clara will have to live in Santa Clara.

When you have that many people and limited land, then yes you need to build for density. Either that or the tech companies need to relocate to other markets.

Which is in turn where the zoning regs come from so yes you are correct.

The tech companies are 30 to 40 miles down the road, but they sell their employees on being bused back and forth from the valley to the city. Maybe this was stupid.

One of the draws of San Francisco is that it isn't like Manhattan.

However, they are still building a ton of new developments. It just seems like you are grandstanding.

Let me guess, NYC should sell Central Park to private developers to make condos too?

A lot of the companies (particularly the start-ups) are right in San Francisco.

It doesn't help that the BART stations are the places with the lowest density build-up so the transit system is next to useless.

California had a great bill that got killed in committee this year to change zoning regs around the BART stations to allow for the development of density around the transit hubs.

Maybe the startups are in repurposed warehouses and stuff, but the big ones that recruit talent and sell them on The San Francisco Experience (not to be confused with The Indiana Difference) are all down around Palo Alto and San Jose. It would be like saying "come work in Naperville so you can live in River North."

Isn’t SF the city where the 5x previously deported illegal immigrant was welcomed with open arms and murdered that young woman on the wharf?

CH and Rick seem to be on the right track here. SF is special and would be less so likely if the landscape was drastically changed. Therefore, people and companies need to make the tough decisions. Deal with the higher costs due to supply and demand, move or change in some other new way.

Maybe people will have to accept they can visit SF easily anytime but cannot live there?

Exactly. There is a reason huge companies are choosing to be there and not a place like Sacramento.

servers are either a part of your business or not, thats the owners choice. "cant afford to pay them" doesnt make sense. charge your customers more. if you dont think your customers want to pay for servers, then dont have servers. what is the problem here? i know sometimes i want a cute girl to serve me, and i dont mind paying more for that. other times i just want cheap food, and i go to the accordingly place for that shit.

The hell does that have to do with this thread? Give it a rest once in a while.
