Like someone mentioned above, she is [now] trying to hang her hat on the fact that the revenue distribution between players in the WNBA and NBA, respectively, is way out of whack (that wasn't her original point). But what she apparently fails to grasp is that:

1. The percentage of league revenue that must end up in the pockets of players is collectively bargained, and the WNBPA is free to have its union members strike the league to negotiate a higher share of revenue.

2. The NBA PA has included a revenue percentage clause in all of their CBA negotiations for the last 25 years.

3. If the WNBA as a league generated more revenue, the owners could be more easily coaxed out of larger and larger percentages of that total by the union, and likewise the threat of a lockout becomes an effective bargaining chip as league revenue increases. It's really hard to ask owners to go deeper into the red to pay higher wages for basketball players.

I remember a great conversation from Miles Copeland ( Sting's manager) in the documentary Bring on the Night where he was talking about the band Sting put together wanting more money and he essentially said " look, the money just isnt there. Youre asking for too much." "Well how much money is on the table?" Doesn't matter, its Sting's table. Its not your table. "We sold out Madison Square garden, and if one of the band members cancel or don't show up, no one will give a shit or give the tickets back. Doesn't mean you aren't great or that people don't like you but your value to the ticket buyer is zero. Now if Sting were to cancel and its just you 4 guys on stage, we don't have a show at all and everyone will want their money back so you cant compare what youre being paid to what Sting gets.

This a terrible and illogical argument to make. It also does no favors for the actual instances where equal pay for equal work is truly an issue.

I was going to put (rare as they may be) but opted not to.

I don't believe there is a pay gap anywhere near 78% or the numbers touted by that movement but I'm sure it exists in certain places.

Hell I saw women getting paid higher based on their looks for years.

Years ago when Bill "Huge" Simonson was on WMVP did he have a gimmick where he challenged female basketball players to an afternoon of one-on-one games, and he kicked all their asses, including some college players? I seem to remember Peggy Kusinski being terribly frustrated by the spectacle.

Not a fucking chance, but if it exists the image of Simonson balling on some WNBA players would be too awesome for me to bear.

Maybe someone better at Googling can find more detailed information.

https://www.thefreelibrary.com/ESPN+RAD ... a063714003

Quote:
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 27, 2000

ESPN RADIO 1000's afternoon host Bill Simonson is inviting all women of Chicago to take him on in one-on-one basketball games during the 2nd Annual Huge Gender Challenge, on Friday, August 4, at Grant Park prior to the Shoot The Bull 3 on 3 Tournament.

Simonson will play eight women (ages 18 and up) in one-on-one games of 21. Co-host Lou Cannellis will provide live play-by-play analysis of each match during the Huge Show, from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

"I don't care if you used to be a pro, I don't care if you played in college, I don't care if you were a high school All-Star, I am still going to win!" Simonson boasts to any female challengers.

Simonson's record last year was 6-2. Interested female challengers 18 and over should call 312.980.1081 to register. Victorious challengers will be awarded a tee shirt that proclaims "I kicked Bill's. . ."

Chicago's ESPN RADIO 1000 is owned and operated by ABC Inc., which also includes WLS-AM, WXCD-FM, WRDZ-AM and WDDZ-AM. For additional information, contact John V. Moore at 312.337.7711 or Robin Beaman at 312.751.9689.

I can’t find much info on it but I am sure I remember Peggy really giving bill shit leading up to the event and him destroying her and then some local college players too. It may have been the only entertaining thing Huge ever did in his ESPN 1000 days. I wish I could remember more details or find some images but I’m not finding much about it. I just remember Huge channeling Bobby Riggs and being a total sexist pig and thinking it was hilarious listening to the girls all boo him.
