This is wildly inaccurate. It's never been thin.

The shows on the Score are just bad now. B&B was something I looked forward to. Would take a late lunch so I could get in 2+ hours including commute home.

Besides the loss of the show above - Goff and Spiegs ruined the Score for me, unlistenable hacks with bad sports thoughts.

No...I would say the Spiegel/Mannelly/Goff/Terry Retirement/Parkins/Bernstein/Goff era would be 2010-2012 TNA.

We are currently in 1998 WCW territory

Ouch. That was pre-NWO, right?

During the NWO...still decent and competitive. Mid 98 was the NWO Red and Black...bad

No, '98 was when the NWO got bloated and split into white and red. It was also the Bill Goldberg year. Pre-NWO was the first half of 1996 when Hulk Hogan was battling Kevin Sullivan's Dungeon of Doom.

It's funny how this works. They're both talented hosts, but together, it was never right.

The pairing of Bernstein with Goff might have damaged Bernsteins career so much it might cost him hundreds of thousands of of dollars in his future earnings.

My favorite part of that whole feud was when The Giant got knocked off the top of the parking garage at Cobo Hall during the Monster Truck deal and still came back to win the title (by DQ!!!) an hour later at Halloween Havoc 95...Yay WCW

Kevin Sullivan's dyslexic brother "Evad".

I'll never know how both WCW and WWF made it through the mid 90's.

WCW got by because they taped weeks of TV at a time and didn't tour. The WWF making it through the tough times is the real mystery.

Same.

Terry even gave up baseball talk. All he would say about baseball is that "Yup, I, I, I enjoy it ."

I think Terry would have been able to blend Joe Sheehan Radio with reality to provide a very interesting listen had Terry not had his troubles.

Unfortunately we got IF YOU WANT TO BE SMART, READ AND REGURGITATE JOE SHEEHAN radio.

The Bernstein tree's attitude of "everything's fine and nothing matters" really kind of undoes the whole premise of the station: we know the shit doesn't really matter. That's the fun of it. If I shouldn't care what's going on, I'll go do something else.

I know that in the real world it doesn't matter if the Yellow King is just a ne'er do well custodian but its fun to escape and lose myself for a couple of hours a week.

Why we don't listen anymore can be summed up very briefly: The voice of the fan has become the voice of the professional organizations.

They have lost their mission.

I knew it was dead when Bernstein rebuked a caller that his client is not the listener. His client is the sponsor.

I was listening to transition today and something funny came up that relates to this thread. People often lament that WSCR is no longer "The Voice of The Fan", and Parkins said the station is the voice of the fan because his friends love the NBA and the Bulls, and when they're going to interview John Paxson he can text his friends ahead of time to let them know. His friends also like that he can ask Jason Benetti to wish them a happy birthday during a White Sox game.

As someone else mentioned it seems like McNeil and Parkins don't take many calls during their show, but Parkins thinks they're the voice if the fan because he can do favors for his buddies.

Sports becomes less magical as you get older and sports radio IMO has become too serious and not enough meatball entertaining hosts now.

They're the voice of 7 specific fans.

1. Penn State.
2. When they became the broadcast home of the teams the hosts were neutered.
3. You can't argue analytics. Numbers are never wrong.

Juice's Lecture Notes wrote:
Saw a spmack post in the McNeil & Parkins section about not listening to much sports talk radio anymore, and I realized that I'm in the same boat, I went from being able to listen straight through the lineup whenever I could and trying to make time daily to listen to as much of The Score as I could, to now driving with the radio off more often than not and listening to podcasts while I'm on the range. And given how often the shows get posted about here nowadays, I'm guessing MANY are as well.

So my question is a simple one: Why?

Starting with me...I guess I just don't find it (in general, not just specifically any show) compelling enough to sit through 5-minute commercial breaks while I'm at the gym when I could be listening to Carolla crack wise. Maybe some of that loss of interest is due to being pushed away by the late political turn of B&B and later B&G literally telling me not to listen, but I can't honestly say that's all of it, because while they put on a better show than the previous afternoon drive show, I don't find McNeil & Parkins to be all that compelling, either.

It could also be the management-friendly tone taken up by MANY. If every time I tune in I hear a host telling me "everything is going to be fine" with a second-place Cubs team that was supposed to be a perennial World Series contender, I'm either going to call bullshit an not listen, or think "hey, everything is going to be fine, guess there's no reason to listen any more until the postseason" and turn off.

1) I never listen to any live shows, just podcasts. When the podcasts are 35 minutes of content, that means the commercials are 25 minutes of the hour. That's ridiculous. Each hour should be 45 minutes of content.

2) SJW - I don't care about any of their political/social views. I care even less because everyone has the same exact same positions (at least on the radio). I don't listen to sports radio for SJW or political stuff. I don't care what they think.

3) Building off the previous point, many of these hosts don't even know the sports/teams they cover. Mac is a great host, but he can't talk NBA. I enjoy NBA talk. Various hosts are known for certain sports, fine. Many state opinions as facts.

4) Local sports coverage is unchanging day to day. When asked during transition what the afternoon show will be talking about, it's shocking to hear that everyday, it'll be about the Cubs, Cubs and more Cubs. Not to say they shouldn't talk local sports or teams, but things don't change much day to day. It's repetitive.

When B&B started podcasting their show, I listened to most hours everyday. I used to listen to their show while I watched muted sports. My wife hated it but it was before we had kids so she tolerated it. It is not hyperbole to say that show actually made my life more enjoyable since I got so much joy from listening to their show everyday. Nowadays, I don’t have that time and no show is as interesting and funny as B&B was. I go back and forth between listening to B&M and S&P and both are mediocre to good depending on the topic.

I can’t say that I follow sports less but I have narrowed down what I am interested in. I used to watch everything but now I don’t watch the NFL, watch very little NBA, and much less college sports and baseball compared to the past. So even though I watch very little of the sports the shows discuss, I still listen for the entertainment.

One more thing: they hired Hub and Levine

It used to be a staple of the station to make fun of the brown noser and Professor Flakey.

I don't have it on all day at work like I did for 15 years. I just listen to W&S on the way home from work in the afternoons, and more during the summer than the fall or winter.
