Oh, so he didn't use the word as an epithet.

How about this- we outlaw the word and make using it punishable by $100 fine per incident?

How about we let the free market work it out?

Maybe if enough dbag rich guys use it the free market will eventually stop having them fired for it.

Are you offended by the word? I offered a solution that would clearly curtail any such offense. Why don't you like that solution?

I'm a big fan of the free market. Say what you want and let the market decide your fate.

I'm not personally offended by the word for obvious reasons.

$100 fine curtails any offense?

We should try that with murder.

Its incredibly easy to not use the word. I get it...it's just a word...but is it worth all this nonsense?

No I wasn't. You're pretending to be offended by the word. Just like the people on the conference call who were pretending to be offended by it. You all probably got in your cars and threw on Kendrick's latest. You aren't offended by the word at all. You just want to have authority to say who can say what. My fine solves that. But you don't like that solution for obvious reasons.

I'm pretty sure if there were a $100 fine for using a word people would stop saying it. But it won't be a fine for only people with certain physical features. The word is offensive, right? Let's eliminate it.

The authoritarian impulse. It's often conservative and quasi-religious.

free markets are only efficient when everyone has equal access to information. therefore it must be mandatory that any utterance of identified words be immediately reported to the government (anonymously of course) for further public notification. It could be like an amber alert. but this is more serious so it could be a crimson alert.

Pretty much. Just don't use it. It's possible other such words will be declared verboten in any context, however, and that starts to get scary.

Its not offensive to me.

And Im actually fine if black people want to say it but dont like white people saying it. Some hypocrisy but understandable with the history of the word.

That's fine on an informal basis. Everyone is entitled to be offended by whatever they want. My point is, the word itself is obviously not offensive to many, including many black people. If we're going to use context, i.e. a black rapper can say it, why can't we consider the context of a white person using it so innocuously? Because we've already established that it's not actually the word itself that is offensive.

Again, he didn't use it as an epithet. If he had said it to a pizza cook out of frustration, I would be the first to say he should be fired. I don't have any problem with Chris Bosio being fired and he used two words that in a different context aren't offensive at all. The context means everything.

For many, in context the Confederate flag isn't about white supremacy. It is sort of the opposite--sort of. So it makes sense to grant everyone your mental energy of figuring out the context. It takes work and can be confusing.

I don't think anyone here has ever suggested making the Confederate flag illegal. Waving it or wearing it is tone deaf at best. But I kind of like it. It's like a warning sign. Here comes a dumbfuck.

I can't say that I have met too many people who flew the Stars and Bars who did not scare me a little, but some of them say that the Confederate flag represents them. Probably be smart to get another symbol, but I can understand what they're saying. Writing them all off is kind of lazy and I can't stand when I do that.

You all probably got in your cars and threw on Kendrick's latest. You aren't offended by the word at all. You just want to have authority to say who can say what. My fine solves that. But you don't like that solution for obvious reasons.

It wouldn't really be my place to be offended by the word. It's about empathy towards those I have known personally who would be offended by the word. That's why I keep mentioning the free market. Business executives have to mindful of how they are perceived and they take a chance when they say things like this. I don't think it's any different than the gay rights fighting Chik-Fil-A guy. I can judge him for his words and let the free market decide if it makes financial sense to keep him or not. With Chik-Fil-A, it seemingly helps their Christian based business and I'm fine with that. The people who run Papa John's had a different opinion on the matter.

It's just really amazing that the free market goes away in matters like this. All of a sudden it shouldn't be the will of the market that factors in employment decisions.
