Two of last online news-sports sites I frequent now have ended comments after articles. The trib about 6 months ago and ESPN recently.

Parkins and j&m mention the negativity about comment sections which is true to a point, but they're loaded with gem nuggets of truth and people's true concerns. Parkins and j&m I believe don't want to hear the truth.

ESPN comments is no great loss .It was bickering mostly. But, at times interesting. The trib comment section was unbelievable. The comments were more interesting than the articles. Sure there were crackpots with senseless comments. But, a lot a people sharing life experiences and insight into current news stories. The comments on Chicago crime stories added significantly to the the main story. Posters would share their disgust of the rampant Chicago crime and theories why the gutless legal system is helping to esculate it. The comments were a great tool to help sort out the truth. Much earlier the trib stopped taking comments on poc crime. But sometime theyd sneek in due to lazy paper staff, vacations, holidays. There'd be sometimes over a hundred interesting comments from concerned citizens on poc crime. Many interesting, alarming and insightful.

Correct, 99% of of the comments posted to the Trib were idiotic. Anybody who read them was dumber for it.

They should be tracking down the ISP addresses of those commenters and arrest them for hate crimes.

In an article I read about this last week someone from ESPN said one of the reasons for removing the comments section is the discussions often strayed from sports. That seems somewhat ironic given the way people in the sports media bristle when told to "stick to sports", and giving that as a reason for removing the comments is kind of ridiculous.

There were trolls in the comments section, just like there are here, but there were also valid criticisms and counterpoints to the article that went beyond the character limits of Twitter which I'm sure the authors did not like.
