This Joe Madden story in the tribune is rich. Mr sabermetrics now is Mr old fashioned baseball. He now says baseball is trending away from anylitics to old fashioned baseball. He breathes sabermetrics. Every move he makes is dictated by anylitics. He bad mouths old fashioned baseball every chance he gets. Until now . Now he's Mr old fashioned baseball too. You've gotta love it.

Maddon has never been a total saber guy. He has always been a mix.

Sabremetrics were only ever a big deal when MLB execs started buying into them and recognizing market inefficiencies. Everyone in baseball has stats out the ass now, so there's no real advantage. You still need players with balls, like Baez. The Cubs would be a bunch of boring choir boys without Baez.

Yeah the mix 95%/5%. Matchups, lineups, pulling pitchers, pinch hitters, defense positioning, quick call ups use, playing a 260 hitting Happ strategically instead of 325 hitting almora, not playing hot hitters instead adhering to saber metrics data, not believing in a old school leadoff hitter because data says it's unimportant, and on and on.

his managing during the world series proved he is definitely not a sabermetrics guy. dude is a master bullshitter but for different reasons that the original post.

Yeah there are no doubt reasons to be irritated with Maddon at times, but being a saber guy is not one of them.

I think Joe is a really interesting guy to listen to. What's really ironic is how his managing worked against the Cubs in the World Series.
