To put this in perspective, a free agent rental Randy Johnson in his prime went to Houston for Freddy García, Carlos Guillén, and John Halama. Garcia and Guillen were long time MLB starters, and Halama was good but got injured and had his career shortened. Many think the Mariners didn't get enough.

DeGrom isn't a rental. He is arbitration eligible and isn't a free agent until 2021.

If you can get him without completely gutting your young core you have to do it.

I agree. But if I'm the Mets, i can't afford DeGrom in arbitration, i need to trade him to a team with the revenue and cap space to give him an extension.

If the Mets don't insist on Almora/Russell/Caratini, they are nuts.

I'll happily send Happ, Russell, Bote, Montgomery, Cartini, lastella and our top 3 prospects.

We just don't have the bullets for this trade.

Yes we do.

This is one of the deepest young rosters in baseball.

They do have depth, they can dump everyone listed above. 2 quality big league starters, 3 quality reserves and it does nothing but impact depth. But these are replaceable assets.

The actual possibility of DeGrom on the Cubs is very exciting.

We need some WHITE STUDS in the starting rotation.

There's some killers waiting for the Cubs in the playoffs. What they trot to the mound, IMO, won't get them a championship this year. So yeah, go get DeGrom.

like who? Nobody scares me in the NL. Even the dodgers w/ Machado.

DeGrom is one of the best young pitchers in the game. If the cost is Happ and Russell you gotta make that deal.

We don't have enough starting pitching. If you want to rely on Darvish to save us we won't make it too far in October.

Huh? Best young pitchers in the game?

He’s 30. That’s not young.

Also. Don’t use “we” when talking about sports teams. Doubt you ever suited up for them. You are a fan, not on the team, sorry.

If not young let’s say cost controlled. They would own his rights for the next three playoff runs

I guess he isn't young. That's my bad.

I'm going to keep saying we just like MANY do when discussing their fav sports teams on this board. That's a losing battle you are trying to fight.

deGrom is not really injury prone. He's missed a start here and there but I think people just lump him in with the other Met starters

He was also real good in his one post season trip.

I would do the deal as presented for sure.

It doesnt matter what they ended up being. The relevant part is what they were thought of as of July 31,1998.

Also, I've never heard anyone say the Mariners didn't get enough. They absolutely did.

Russell, Happ, and Caratini could get it done maybe.

Easily in the team photo for worst and most pretentious sports opinions.

Theo: Hey Mets, we will trade you a big pile of shit for Jacob deGrom

Mets: You think we will trade you deGrom for a pile of shit?

Theo: I wouldn't insult you by offering a pile of shit. I am offering a BIG pile of shit!

I know, it would be so unlike the Mets to do something stupid.

3 ready to start in MLB players is not a pile of shit though.

which ones are you talking about as a few names have been thrown out

Mets are looking for 6+ years of control out of players when you evaluate what they might consider shit

Caratini, Russell, and Happ

All 24 or younger, capable of starting at MLB level and controllable for years.

Might not be enough, but its not a pile of shit.

Russell is already in arbitration years and he is the centerpiece of the trade.

I wouldn't be so sure about Caratini being capable of starting. If he is your starting C, you are probably a bad team.

When I say shit, I'm exaggerating as this is the typical sports talk trade: create a collection of guys that the buyer thinks looks better because it has more players.

From Yahoo Sports...

Jacob deGrom, SP, New York Mets
DeGrom’s agent let us know how he feels about his client’s future. He’s asked the Mets to either offer an extension or trade deGrom before the 2019 season. The Mets don’t seem likely to consider either option during the 2018 season. While deGrom’s current value is the highest it’s ever been, they still have two seasons of control to weigh their options. The Mets asking price is reportedly high enough that interested teams believe he’s not truly available.
Likelihood he is dealt: Low
Possible destinations: Yankees, Indians, Brewers
