Yep, they got a large Amish population. I was imagining one of them as Dan Tanna.

They have a large Latino population there, too. It's interesting--they went and recruited them forty or fifty years ago. There are a lot of Latinos is small, downstate communities. I guess it makes sense.

What he owes is not going away. Typically a judge will set a purge amount and if he pays it (some smaller percentage of what's owed) he'll get out of jail. If he does he'll also have to continue to make payments on the rest of what he owes, if he doesn't he goes back to jail.

This doesn't really seem like a case where a body attachment would be ordered in Illinois. This goof is begging for incarceration. You know we don't have debtor's prisons in the U.S. The point of putting a child support deadbeat in Cook County jail is because somehow that money the guy "doesn't have" usually magically appears after at night or two at 26th and Cal.

If he wants to go to jail he can go to jail. When he wants out he can cough up some money.

Yeah, but you know how that works. There aren't any judges, at least in the Cook County Domestic Relations Division, that are going to leave a guy in jail for more than a week, if that. I don't know anything about the jurisdiction he's in, but in Chicago, nobody stays in County Jail if there is any way to come up with the cash.

His situation is a bit different because it appears that he wants to be locked up. If he's stupid enough to think that will get him out of paying what he owes I say let him be stupid.

I used to spend two or three days down there a year. The glorious central Illinois poultry processing plant. Horse and buggy Amish.

local lock-ups--county/city jails--often a worse experience than full-on prison life. But if dude wasn't in gen-pop, then he was shielded from the problems that crop up when you have high turnover of a mish-mash of present and future convicts. also, they try to sort and separate people at 26th and Cal based on such things as gang-affiliation; usually your ink will determine which cell-block you end up in at cook county.

Ever see the movie Witness starring Harrison Ford? Pretty good story about Amish people gets intertwined in the story.
