Opening a window probably stirs up pet dander or whatever other resting particles are on anything near the window. Its a different air flow pattern that the HVAC system so it stirs it up.

There's a podcast called "sleep with me" that is very good. It's a guy who has insomnia himself who has learned to tell stories in a way that is so meandering, with so many pauses, that you eventually get bored and fall asleep.

I was sceptical at first, but now I use it about once a week. (They do 2/week).

I suffer from chronic wake up at 2AM can’t fall back asleep syndrome. It’s like Doc says, stupid worrying about work stuff, or a project. It’s silly. I’ve woken up and shot straight up in bed worried that I left a gate open. Can’t go back to sleep till I check. I’ve done this a few dozen times over past few years. Not once has it been open. The mind just starts churning and churning. I’m an anxiety guy, whether I’ve had zero drinks or 12, makes no difference.

As far as initial fall asleep, that can happen too and while chemicals surely help, I’ve gone the classical music route of late. Or reading Moby Dick.

Reading will not work for me. I get too interested and won't put the book down. I try remembering everything I can about a fun pIace i have been. I try to remember as many details as I can. The more detail the more tired the brain seems to get, or maybe just unwind. My insomnia can be driven by tasks to complete or moments of remembering failures. So a fun/happy place can change the mindset. I go with fly fishing as a kid.
