I'm sure I'm alone, but one thing that has fascinated me for years is the evolution of dress code for attending pro sporting events. We've all seen the old time photos of people in full suits and fedoras and then the early color photos of the 50s and 60s with fans all wearing white button down shirts and slacks.

My question is, when did it become a thing to wear team jerseys/garb to games? It definitely wasn't a thing when was a kid. I still remember going to Hawks games in the early 80s and not seeing very many jerseys. Now, you'd be hard pressed to find people who weren't wearing some form of Hawks clothing.

Same with Bulls games...don't remember people wearing Bulls garb even during the Jordan years, but maybe I am just remembering wrong.



If anyone ever came out with a coffee book that focused on crowd shots from sporting events over time I would buy that in a heartbeat. I would love to see some historical photos where we could figure out an era when the team garb became the predominant dress code for sporting events.

I've always been fascinated with it too and was recently talking with my grandma about dress codes at sporting events and society in general back from those days.

I remember looking at a picture on my phone taken of Babe Ruth after he ran into a wall and knocked himself out and turning to my girlfriend and saying "look everyone in that picture is dead now". For whatever odd reason it's a total mindfuck for me.

I remember working at Foot Locker in the early to mid-90s and we were selling hockey jerseys but they didn't have the names and
numbers on the back. Don't remember carrying much in the way of football and basketball jerseys back then so I'm guessing that it
probably wasn't until closer to turn of the century where the jersey thing got ramped up. The hottest shit you could wear back in the
early 90s was a Starter branded type jersey

I was in elementary school during the mid 90's and I recall the first day of 4th grade a bunch of boys wearing nfl and nba jerseys when no one had one in 3rd grade.

sports and leisure ware apparel started booming in the late 80s as I recall.

Look back in the 60s and kids wore plain white t shirts as their play wear. 70s brought the beginning of Nike and things like sweats gained prominence. I think the 80s is when you started to see team gear but it still wasn't great.

i remember back in '79 or '80 getting my first jersey, it was a New York Giants #10. They didn't have players names on them back at the time, but it was Brad Van Pelt's number and he was may favorite Giants player at the time. I recall it being a big deal among my friends to have one, it wasn't nearly that common back then. I have a bunch of others from the 80's and early 90's that I gave to my kid as he has grown up. I went to a handful of games back when i was little and I also dont remember seeing too many jerseys being worn at the stadium, but it was a long time ago.

So you weren't always bald then.

There is s picture somewhere of young squirrel in adidas shorts and shirt and I remember these being the first branded athletic clothes I wore to school. Pretty sure those shorts would of made John Stockton ask me ifI thought they might be a little short and tight. Would have been 83ish and I have minimum memories of team apparel except caps and NFL winter jackets. Those would have been late 70’s or early 80’s.

I blame it all on Zubaz.

the baseball cap has really invaded the world. the recent world cup was an example.

I was a caddy in the mid 80s. Obviously every Monday would be an off day and my friends and I would play golf for free on the course in the morning and head to a cubs game if they were playing the afternoon. I had a thing where I bought a hat every time I went to a game. Back then, all the hats for sale to the public had the mesh backing and were only $5.

Me too. Growing up on the south side as a Cub fan, I went to many Sox games and would always buy the opposing team's hat. I had every team at one point.

I had forgotten about that but I also recall collecting opposing team hats.
