We hold up successful people as heroes. It applies to actors, musicians, athletes, and CEO's. The country craves to see and hear about successful people. How they did it. How they live. They make movies about Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg.

It is perfectly American to look up to and hold these folks in high regard.

He's wrong, it don't take much strength to pull a trigger but try getting up every morning day after day and work for a living, let's see him try that, then we'll see who the real tough guy is, the working man is the tough guy, your father's the tough guy!

Well I don't think taking one college course or several would much change someone's outlook. I would say this on your question:

1. Is it true?

2. It if is what are all the factors that you think go into it?

I would say that the rise of the billionaire celebrity is certainly a major factor as is the idea that everyone is an entrepreneur.

I think a good part of it is middle class people want to keep those beneath them....beneath them.

Speaking of the middle class, don't forget all the shows that featured those who weren't so poor.

Guys, "Remington Steele" still airs Sunday at 2P on WWME 23, flagship of the MeTV Network. For the record, when "Remington Steele" initially aired weeknights, the ratings stunk and MeTV removed it from its schedule.

As for "Cannon" & "Kojak" being removed, consider this. MeTV has over 100 classic TV shows in its library now. They would like to air as many different shows as possible and create a rotation of sorts.

For the record, there are different shows coming to MeTV. "Quincy, M.E.", starring the late, great Jack Klugman, "Matlock" with the late, great Andy Griffith and other shows will be debuting on Me in the coming years.

Anyway, I'm a communist, guys.

Except we're talking millionaire athletes vs billionaire owners, both of which are higher on the food chain than Joe Sixpack.

No, we aren't. That's the other thread, which just inspired this thread on the larger issue.

There is a lot to unpack here.

When it comes to the NFL the owners have a big edge from one point of view as opposed to the other sport's players. That said, they do give a lot of their starts guaranteed money in bonuses and full guarantees even if not the full contract. Also, the players have an edge in those contracts with hard money and they do get hurt very often.

Regarding normal society I think it is spot on that the battle is really more the person making 75k versus the one making 50k versus the one making nothing. These people are more inclined to keep their own lot in life. I see those arguments a lot more than the 1% only wanting to kill all unions on principle.

Lastly, I just had another thought about sports people over others in the general discussion of life. At some point it began common to talk about how being a pro athlete was a lottery ticket to a life of leisure until your dying days. We often hear they need to plan forever on that 5 year deal. Why is that and when did it start? Why can't they just max what they get for the time they play and move on to the next thing?

I don't think it's even close to that sinister. I find it far more likely that people have been trained to identify with authority and management.

Q: What's more American than deciding a football player is making too much money and therefore rescinding your "first dibs" on his services for the upcoming season/s and letting the free market decide what he's worth?

I don't think it's even that sinister. If you're running a race with 10 people and running 8th, it's probably natural to want to keep those two behind you to avoid being last as much as just trying to run your best race.

I think what you mention is part of it, too.

People who are running a race clearly see the people behind then. If someone moves into your neighborhood you might compare yourself to them, but I doubt you are saying if they came from LeRoy it means I'm losing the economic race now.

They really don’t have to be. One side of the business/union equation needs to work with the other.

This is beyond sports and Julio Jones. Across the whole spectrum you see more and more of this. Right to work, the demonization of unions, etc.

I'd say this is largely happening because the face of unions we see most often are the public sector unions and they are quite simply leeches upon the taxpayers.

There are obvious problems with public sector unions.

It's easier to write off the concerns of unions and union members. But if something is bad for business, many believe that America will crumble within days.

Quite a jump from problems with public sector unions to "simply leeches upon the taxpayers."

It seems to me that in most situations, the majority of Americans default to siding with management over labor.

There are many people who will say "they're running a busines" to justify just about any and everything.

Since our new team took over the site.

And we would like to thank you all (most of you anyway) for your wisdom in having chosen to do so.
