I don't think your post implied that management was running a charity operation for employees.

But before give and take occurs at work, it would be helpful for management and ownership to acknowledge openly their gratitude for their employees. And for MANY employees to acknowledge to themselves that management and ownership has taken risked that they themselves lack the fortitude to do themselves.

Odd? Of course in larger areas there are multiple companies to work at. But in general if a union forces a plant to leave or close where is the work at?

I do as well, and I can honestly say my perspective of the employer/employee relationship has changed dramatically. The reason I ask is because the original question of this thread is confusing.

We decided to side with management when the concept of "managers" was created. That's kind of the point.

I will say it is a lot easier just doing your job than having to be sure that others are doing theirs. But there is also a distinct amount of incentive compensation that is great if/when your organization does well. So at least you get paid for the significant headache that is managing people.

You either misunderstand the question or are purposely reading it as something else.

It's incredibly simple.

In a given dispute between management and labor, most people on the outside looking in seem to default to siding with management.

I think your take that people IN MANAGEMENT side with themselves is a little self explanatory.

I agree that organizational success hinges on the power of the workers. Motivating those workers to agree on what success looks like is the bigger challenge. I believe people on the outside looking in side with managers because they have the more difficult job.

I also think there are a few different eras of labor that have affected the attitude one way or another. From the beginning where labor needed help to not basically be horrible slavery through the fat cat times of union largess until what we see today there is a wide variance.
