Here Are Some Nuclear Takes from Bryan Goldberg, the Self-Satisfied Shitlord Who Now Owns Gawker.com

Quote:
On Thursday morning, the world learned that Bryan Goldberg has won the bidding for Gawker.com, the now-defunct sister site of our sister sites, which was sold as part of the bankruptcy process around Gawker Media, their now-defunct parent company. (It’s been an eventful couple of years.) Goldberg, who won the bidding by spending a reported $1.35 million, is the founder of Bleacher Report, the only site to ever successfully underestimate the intelligence of sports fans, and Bustle, the only site ever created about women’s issues. He is also, evidently, someone who has many spicy Facebook takes. A scan through comments he has made on the platform shows that Goldberg has a number of fun opinions about, among other things, homeless people, socialism, affirmative action, and issues connected to the #MeToo movement.

Here he is opining positively on the Trump administration’s rollback of environmental regulations, for example:

What the fuck even is this? A hit piece about a guy who bought the last vestiges of your snarky blog in a bankruptcy auction because your snarky blog went bankrupt when you were found liable in a civil action for things you published on your snarky blog?

What are these people planning to do once this ship goes down, and how much could they possibly be getting paid now?

And oh god this comment just kills it:

Quote:
Maybe you’re not the best person to deliver this message: https://jezebel.com/is-the-uva-rape-sto ... 1665233387

We can jump into the history of sites such as Deadspin, still run by people such as Drew Magary, Tim Marchman, Albert Burneko, Tom Ley and others who slut-shamed the fuck out of Beejoli Shah when she accused their buddy Greg Howard of sexually assaulting her - an issues that has never even been acknowledged by Deadspin. Other issues with sexual assault never addressed over there or by any of your sites? Tommy Craggs. AJ Daulerio.

Samer Kalaf, who still writes there, once equated women’s tennis success to boob size. Never even an apology. But hey, he’ll chime in about Barstool’s misogyny every now and then. Cool story.

We don’t even have to get into the hateful rhetoric spewed by The Root for anyone they don’t deem to even be the correct shade of brown. As a Latino, that racist, shit-filled site can burn for all I’m concerned. It should be called Rootbart.

Let’s be honest, the entire fame of this web site can be traced directly back to paying for, and publishing a Brett Favre dick pic. Nope, nothing wrong with that.

We can go on and on all day. I guess what I’m saying is YOU, and many of your colleagues are downright hypocrites every time you bash people like him. Your lack of self-awareness is astounding.

And this reply to that comment:

Quote:
I don’t think it is a lack of self awareness. I just think it is desperation. Falling readership, staff, and owner support. Anybody with any talent has already left. The writers still around, like Merlan, have to know that they have no job prospects. Otherwise they would have left during the last round of buyouts.

Ouch.

The revenue generated by Kinja Deals probably far outpaces the ad revenue from page views of all Gawker/Gizmodo media sites.

Having an adblocker has made me miss banner ads for stuff like "Totally Demented Tees" where it's an Anna Kendrick lookalike with her mouth half-open looking off to the side at something off-camera and wearing a shirt that says, like, "Shoes Are Gloves For Feet."

Another remarkably shitty blog take. There's nothing wrong with what Manfred says and much of it is true. Bonus points for completely invalidating the entire blog post in the intro of the last paragraph:

Quote:
Obviously baseball’s commissioner can’t come out and say Mike Trout isn’t as popular as like 40 different NBA players because the Angels blow and MLB is increasingly culturally irrelevant

the article itself is not interesting. whats interesting is the comments. their commenters are somewhat delusional. posting website activity of the two sites and making it seem like nobody actually utilizes barstool sports and it too is failing.

Quote:
according to Comscore, nobody. fun fact: more people [‘unique visitors’] read Timothy Burke over the months of March and April 2018 than read all of barstoolsports.com, according to Comscore.

Quote:
And yet somehow they’re hiring people, while Deadspin is firing people.

Quote:
I could be wrong (and if someone who writes/works for GMG wants to jump in and correct, go for it), but I took the buyouts as more along the lines of Univision saying “we’re going to reduce headcount by x amount”, and the union negotiating buyouts as a way for staff to decide if they wanted to leave (with a generous buyout package) instead of letting the upper management unilaterally lay people off.

#1. as irksome as barstool can be at times, their growth is purely social media driven. almost all their content is accessed from social media and thus is not tracked by unique website visitors. perhaps this is the reason why deadspin is a failing entity. you still have to visit their website to access all content.

#2. many of these commenters seem to be staffers grasping at straws to imply that this site is fine and all this univision stuff is just negotiations and business as usual.

This article:
https://deadspin.com/why-co-ed-sports-leagues-are-never-really-co-ed-1827699592

The thesis:
Co-ed leagues suck because men don't pass/let the women play or are too competitive and ways that are used to address this issue are condescending or sexist. Therefore, co-ed leagues suck because men.

If I take this argument further, then co-ed leagues should ban men.

I try to look at arguments from others' point of view, but even I am having a hard time finding a point or purpose of this article.

I read that today. I played in a co-ed corporate softball league for about 10 years. We had a few ex-college level female players from smaller schools. Admittedly a few were better than some of our lower grade male co-workers. But any guy with average or better male talent was way better than these girls. Of course we put them at easier positions. And if you walked a guy, then the girl after him was also deemed walked.

I know it sucks, but people want to put women on parity with men in athletic endeavors. And on balance, they just don't match up. Sorry.

Co-ed leagues aren't meant to be competitive. They exist to help people get laid. The lesbians play in their own all-women leagues.

But it is true that a lot of men play like douchebags in co-ed leagues. You're acting like it's Game 7 of the World Series when in reality you're playing against girls at Wilson Park.

its not just softball. We had a guy on this board who bragged about having the high average on a Sunday Mixed bowling league.

Towards the end of my playing days, I used to be the pitcher for our team. There were guys trying to take walks. I could hear them chirp from the dugout about always taking the first pitch, and you already started with a 1-1 count. One day I struck out several of their guys looking or when they would foul off for strike three. I walked past one of them and muttered, "did you come out here to take walks in under hand co-ed corporate league softball?".

One pretty good coed sport is indoor soccer. A lot of these former women soccer players are good and can compete with the guys in the indoor game where quickness is more important than speed.

I learned my lesson about going for the gaps and even the fence. We had the most unathletic guy join our team. It would probably take him 10 seconds to get to first base and he ran like a penguin. The rest of us would often hit fly outs or occasionally pop out because we were swinging so hard. The new guy went 23 for 25 or something like that just dumping the ball over the SS's head on every at bat.

Does anyone know if they still have the Windy City softball league in Grant Park? It was the best league for slow pitch softball in Chicago when they didn't allow gloves. When they introduced gloves to the game, it was no longer any fun for me and I quit.

Pretty solid "take". I mostly had good experiences in co-ed softball because we all went out drinking afterwards anyway.

/Brags about something no one on the board cares about

I’m lethal in co-ed softball because I hit to right 90% of the time, and there’s almost always a girl at 2nd and left. Any ball that gets to the outfield is a double. Sexist? Sort of, but I ended up hitting that way because in men’s leagues the worst fielders are also at 2nd and LF. I get so much slice as a righty on hard hit flies to left I get a lot of cheap triples because the guy misreads it.

i played coed for about 10 years before i had had enough. there are some who take that too seriously but those guys are a small minority. at least around here. the real reason that coed sucks is because the women are horribly unreliable to even show up. i played on numerous teams with numerous different people and it was always the same....scrambling to find enough women to play.

maybe it is because they are fed up playing a sport where they are usually the worst players on the field. but its an individual sport where no one can not "pass you the ball".

typical text conversation when i coached for 2 years :

me 24 hours before game : games at 6 an 7 will you be there?

girl 3 hours before game : yes i will be there

me : ok thanks i was starting to look for a sub

girl : nope will be there

1 hour before game time girl : are games still on looking at the forecast

me blocking sun from my eyes : um yeah, they are still on

3 minutes to game time : where are you are you almost here?

girl : oh it got really cloudy i assumed games were cancelled. (or my cat got sick or my friend is having some issues and needs to talk, etc et) now try having this text conversation at the same time with multiple women. i get it some dudes are divas too but nowhere near this bad.

i handed the reigns over to a women cop who doesn't take shit from anyone. and she even quit after a season. she was like this is ridiculous.

this women is talking about a few experiences in 1 coed soccer league and making large generalizations about the state of coed sports in America.

My experience being the guy who texts everyone to find out if they are com8ng is similar but it doesn’t matter if it’s males or females. I tell them over and over saying can’t make it is acceptable, me texting you a thousand times to get a maybe is not. Then I love it when I take them off the text and get attitude about not getting texts for last two weeks or whatever. 1sr off, I sent you the damn schedule week one. Secondly wtf, maybe if you responded just once I’d figure you were actually interested.

Done with it, has taken a lot of the fun out of it for me.

I looked at our qc softball page on fb. In the month of July 22 times people were looking for girls to fill in. Half the tine they were looking for more than 1 girl. Compared to 3 times looking for guys.

Special guest appearance from The Ringer as Josh Hartnett turns a man gay:

Quote:
It was the way he moved (always with purpose, but never with noise). And the way he slouched (it was like he was recoiling into himself because he knew if he let loose the full strength of his libido it would wobble the solar system). And the way his cheekbones framed his mouth like a renaissance painting. And the way his jawline looked like it filed its own income taxes. And the way his long sleeves always seemed to be covering his hands (it was always oddly romantic). And the way his hair was less a hairstyle and more a declaration of individuality (I very clearly remember trying to do my hair the way he had his in The Faculty and thinking I looked very cool all the way up until a cashier at Walmart one afternoon asked me if I was “sick or something”). And his eyes.

Whoa, mama, those eyes.

Eyes that said, “Be careful with me.”

Eyes that said, “I’ll be careful with you.”

Eyes that said, “You don’t have to be careful with me.”

Eyes that said, “And I’m not going to be careful with you.”

Eyes that said everything they needed to say, always, forever, every time, literally every single time, even in 40 Days and 40 Nights, a movie that, no joke, was about him trying to give up cumming for Lent, if you can even believe that.

For the record, the author's name is "Shea Serrano," which all but confirms my suspicion that he'd been reading a ton of Junot Diaz and wanted to apply Diaz's "chica had a big ol' ass that could make a brother say damn to a homegirl but also make a brother write Petrarchan sonnets in honor of its majesty" style but instead of writing it about a Dominican woman had to do it about Josh Hartnett.
