Am I the only one watching this on HBO?
I remember reading the book when I went on a Gillian Flynn bender before Gone Girl came out in theaters.
I do not remember how it ends, so please no spoilers...
It's pretty great TV, and if you've seen anything online about Amy Adams 'getting all the awards', it's probably true.
She's a treasure.
Holy shit, Rizzo!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

It seems to hit all the marks of Prestige TV without being as good.

it was a good book, but i feel like "dark places" deserved this treatment more. the movie that was shat out of that story was an atrocity.

"sharp objects" seems like it'll have a lot of stretch, and filler.

I don't seem to have the time during the summer that I do at other times of the year to binge watch stuff. I've learned over the years
to make sure I get outside and enjoy things between May and end of October. I love Wisconsin but sometimes it really sucks living here
during the off months.

Yeah, Dark Places had so much promise with Charlize Theron....and it sucked. Like a Cinemax movie.
Maybe Sharp Objects will never live up to Gone Girl, but I'm really liking it.
The camera work alone is pretty great.
Camille might have a drinking problem, though....

i didn't like the casting of amy adams. i wanted krysten ritter. after hearing her narration in "jessica jones", that's the only voice i could hear when i read the book. and, she just looks like camille.

i don't have HB0 right now anyway, so i can't watch it. but i think i'd pass until it's all done before giving it a try. and with turning it into a series, i dread them trying to give it a second season too.

They've already announced it as a limited series so I'm not sure how else they could expand on the story. Then again, they did the same thing with Big Little Lies, so who knows.

A/V Club said yesterday they are NOT doing a second season.
I'd have to think about Krystin Ritter.....
It's weird when you read the book and have someone pictured in in the cast, and are either totally disappointed by the choice, or it nails it.
Like I said, I don't really recall the book, but I can see why you'd say that. Ritter was really good in BB, never watched Jessica Jones.

if it were a Netflix series, it'd have already been approved for a 2nd season. i'm hoping they don't. with the way the story ends, it is pretty much impossible to do. but money's money.

I don't know what it is but I am insanely confused with what is going on with this show.

Only through 3 episodes though so maybe it clears up soon.

All the jump cuts/flashbacks can be a little disconcerting.

It's a very dark show.

The flashbacks are pretty effective as a weekly show. I don't want to see/know what happened to her in the woods as a teenager but I can't stop watching.

I haven't done a "down the internet rabbit hole" with this show but the changed words on just about every sign have some significance.

I wish this was set further south than Missouri. It doesn't have the same southern gothic feeling in Missouri.

I know people have a hard on for Amy Adams work but Patricia Clarkson is stealing the show in my opinion.

I think we know what happened and it was similar to what the Union soldiers did to her great great etc. grandmother for whom she was probably named.

I think the changed words are words that she has carved on herself.

Yeah, it seems more like it should be in the Deep South, but I guess Southern Missouri works.

One thing that bothers me is that some of her scars look like they are in places where it would have been difficult for her to write.

The scars are pretty ridiculous in their precision. Skin isn't that great of a medium to work in. You can only use straight lines and even that isn't going to be that neat.

I think I am following it all, but you never know with these show writers. Hard to tell if the scenes are all reality and what types of red herrings are being tossed about. True Detective taught me to be cynical.

Well, not really, but I do think a lot of people are shocked to find out that slave labor was used in the free state of Illinois. When this place was privately owned nobody was willing to spend the night there. Some reporter scoffed and said he would do it but he didn't make it through the night, he came running out of there. It's now state-owned, but I'm pretty sure you can't get near it:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crenshaw_ ... ,_Illinois)

Anyway, Southern Missouri works well for a story that features a past with North-South tensions.

but it just doesn't look the part of southern gothic. I need some Spanish moss and foliage overgrowing what used to be a well kept yard. Also, further south you can entertain more of the supernatural.

Wind Gap is more Anytown, U.S.A. It's value as the scene of the story is that it is nowhere and everywhere. I think the directors recognized this as they said they added the entire Calhoun Day scene because it was not in the book. I didn't read the book so I don't know. It did seem out of place that the town would be so confederate sympathetic when no one previously was indicating such pride.

I think it creates timelessness to the town/story.

Any chance the newspaper editor is her father?

Whoa, hmm, I doubt that, but that's a decent guess.

I knew the roller skating was probably something to do with time.....thanks.

Her editor in St. Louis? No way.

Calhoun Day itself is a weird celebration but no one raises an eyebrow at the guy who lead either a consensual/nonconsensual gang sexual interaction years ago now produces the play about the same topic despite everyone seemingly knowing both stories

When the Chief told Adora, "One of your daughters is in danger and the other is dangerous", he was obviously correct but he doesn't understand which is which.

One of the best lines in the show yet. That younger daughter is something else.

Edit: Help me with the meaning behind that "Ripe" comment. You smell ripe or something like that....

That was when she came home after Richard was fingering her.
