I had this very thought the other night when I was watching the No Passport Required on PBS. Marcus Samuelsson was going around to various Mexican restaurants in Chicago. The show was purportedly about food, but seemed more like anti-Trump propaganda. Samuelsson was talking to Carlos Gaytan, formerly of Mexique, and he used a bunch of loaded language that was clearly designed to get Carlos to rail against the current administration. Now maybe Carlos is just a shrewd businessman who doesn't want to unnecessarily offend about a third of his potential clientele or maybe he doesn't see things the way Samuelsson does. I don't know, but the thought did occur to me that Samuelsson was making quite an assumption based on nothing more than the fact that Carlos was originally from Mexico.

One of my friends who is of Mexican heritage will go absolutely berzerk over that stuff, and I don't blame him. Earlier this year, he said that some white woman accused him of being racist against Mexicans because he supported Trump. When he informed her that he was, in fact, Mexican, she did not change her tune at all. She advised him that he was STILL racist against Mexicans. I can think of few things that are more condescending than that.

LTG, if you want an example of racism, that's one. Some white people think minorities are so dumb they can't even have opinions about their own people.

I undoubtedly believe that is true but if you search hard enough you can find someone that thinks and believes just about anything.

The immigrant that you cited earlier. I wonder if he knows that Trump considers him to be a Drug dealer, rapist, and a murderer?

Yep. Everyone's dumb opinions are accessible in the internet age.

Especially leash's.

Also what she did wasn't racist. She misused the term and she made presumptions about the guy.

Thats not racist. About 10-11 years ago i'd get into similar arguments with people because i voted for Hillary over Obama. Don't think anyone called me racist but i do think they questioned whether i "loved black people". Definitely some funny looks on that end.

The idea that all minorities should hate Trump is not some small idea. It's mainstream and is repeated in the media dozens of times every day. The whole "this was just an isolated incident" argument only works when it's actually ttue.

That's your opinion and you are trying to provide credibility to it by looping the mainstream media into it.

You're generalizing too much quite frankly. Blacks aren't a monolithic group. People are free to think what they want.

How is this any different than what guys like Sowell, Loury, Elder do with respect to the black vote for Democrats? For years they essentially told blacks that they are stupid for voting Democrat. This is the part that you and Jorr either miss or neglect to mention.

They have been promoting the very same thing for decades.

How am I in any way telling blacks or anyone else who to vote for? I'm arguing the exact opposite of that. I'm condemning people who assume certain groups should vote a certain way.

I specifically listed Sowell Loury and Elder. They have been telling blacks that they are stupid for voting Democrat. How is this any different?

Well you should be condemning those three also among other Black Conservatives.

Actually you are more likely to hear this partucular argument from the Black Conservative crowd. That is another way they ingratiate

I don't believe Loury does that. I don't even think he's a Conservative.

And Glen Loury and John McWhorter don't make a living talking about race.
This entire post is a non-sequitur. I have no idea why you want to shift the conversation to personal biographies when your entire critique about Coates was more about who his writing appeals to. And I have asked you the very basic question about who do you think is reading Quillette, other than totally not tribal white people like yourself? If Coates' writing only flatters white readers, it seems to me that charge can apply equally to the black conservative thinkers you like as well.

I likewise have no idea what you think is particularly damning about the Gladwell passage or Coates' citation of it, particularly since it's an actual personal experience with a small amount of social science thrown in rather than a poor attempt at refuting people who study the racial wealth gap.

 Now you're going to attack me as a "tribal white person". You're so full of crap.

When confronted with a fact- a fact he clearly acknowledges by the way- that threatens the foundation of his entire philosophy, what does Coates do? He tosses off a trifle beginning with a dumb cliche about "immigrant ambition", something you'd ridicule if it came from Thomas Sowell or Larry Elder let alone one of us plebes on this message board, and then he hands the column over to Malcolm Gladwell culminating with the dreaded "n-word" to obliterate any argument.

If any of them say "_____ should vote Republican," I would disagree with them because individuals have different situations and values. But context matters here. You know as well as I do that there is an assumption that minorities should all vote Democrat, and that belief has existed for as long as I have been alive. Sowell and Elder are trying to fight against that myth, but they are in a very small minority. It would be different if black people already primarily voted Republican and Elder and Sowell were saying the same things they say now.

I'm definitely going to if you're defending Quillette, the site that's published approximately 100 articles about how mean and unfair it was for Ezra Klein to dare suggest Sam Harris was being tribalistic alongside racial realism dross, those damn college kids, and all the other favorite topics of the super subversive "Intellectual Dark Web." But if you see it differently, once again, feel free to finally get around to answering who Hughes' piece was written for and how it's any different from your accusation that Coates just writes stuff to make white liberals feel good about themselves.

What is this ominous "fact" that Coates is so threatened by, the title of the article? I agree that just bringing up the simple concept of selection bias and immigrant status is a far more efficient way of handling the people who are seem to get off on Just Asking Questions about black immigrants compared to native born blacks, but that's kind of implicit in his point anyway. And I once again don't see what so offends you about Gladwell's recounting of his actual experiences. Do you think he's lying? Or do you just dislike the implication?

It doesn't offend me at all. And I actually like Gladwell and find his writing interesting. But he often leans on the anecdotal in a way that someone like you would never countenance if the same were done by someone trying to make a point with which you disagreed ideologically.

May be assumed i dont know but the reason that blacks vote Democrat is because the Democrats have promoted policies that are advantageous for blacks. Republicans don't and haven't for at least 60 years.

Reader and I have tried to point this out on numerous occasions and it always falls on deaf ears.

When blacks see that Republican are attempting to roll back Affirmative Action programs which benefit blacks, change mininum sentence laws, institute voter id legislation which prevents blacks from voting, then why would they want to vote Republican?

The problem with guys like Sowell is that they never provide a reason for blacks to vote Republican either. It always comes back to "vote Republican because the Democrats have failed you". Nothing is a panacea but i can point to a number of ways in which they haven't "failed us". I can point to specific policies which were designed to benefit blacks.

I can't say that about Republicans and the last Republican president to implement policies to designed to help blacks was Nixon.

Except of course that excerpt is never really treated as anything much more than anecdotal either, not some grand knockout argument of the kind Hughes purports to be making against Baradaran, et. al. Like I'm pretty sure that was nothing more than a blog post by Coates in the first place.

I'm inclined to agree with my earlier assessment that this is just pointless equivocation and an effort to change the topic.

It is only your opinion that Democrats have done better for blacks. That's the crux of the whole thing... people assume that Democrats have done more things for blacks. That's simply not a fact. Conservatives believe that less regulation lifts up everyone. You're free to disagree, of course, but that doesn't mean that they somehow don't care about blacks. Relatively speaking, blacks are doing better under Trump than they did Obama.

I'm not insecure at all. I would try and debate you but, as always, you have come back from your tune up at the Hardy Ranch chock full of any excuse possible to ignore the views of others and pontificate about your new way of thinking. I don't think it's a coincidence at all that you went silent while America and TM were banned. You didn't have your MAGA Racist Message Board anymore. It's ok. Just own it.

I'm sure all the new people the wisemen are trying to attract will love you and America (the poster. You both hate the country)

You are such a pussy. You are so thin-skinned you can't even have a debate and instead cry that others aren't listening to your point of view. LTG and I are having a conversation right now. You know why? Because he's not a pussy like you are. He doesn't view someone disagreeing with him as some personal slight.

Your constant obsession and keeping track of when I don't post for a few days illustrates what a weird and insecure bitch you are. Do you have a calendar that keeps track of when I post? Get a fucking life.

What is the topic? That you want to rail on about how you don't like Quillette?

I dunno, I felt inclined to offer you who I thought the audience of that publication is, since you've been making such a fuss about Coates just writing to make white liberals feel warm and fuzzy on the inside and haven't actually answered the question for Hughes. I guess when a right-wing site publishes something about race that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside though, that's because the writer is merely using his powers of Reason™ and Logic™ and you're merely appreciative of such objective analysis, rather than those icky ideological liberals who like Coates.

Good to see that you still add absolutely nothing and are obsessed with my posting due to your insecurity.

It seems to trigger you greatly when I point out how you have become. I really don't think you should be pointing fingers about being thin skinned. I know your AWAKENING has made you miserable about life in general, but you have become one of the most condescending, closed minded posters on here.

Oh and I wasn't keep track of when you post, your absence during the time out was conspicuous.

Now do I need to role play and predict your profanity laced name calling response? Or will you do that on your own?

Yeah..... So i went back and read through your conversation. It's the same shit as you pull with me and anybody else who disagrees with you minus the profanity and name calling.

Keep up the great posting Leash!

Likewise, most of the Mexican people I know are against illegal immigration. In fact, some find it insulting that others think they would automatically be in favor of illegal immigration. They worked hard to get here and think everyone should have to do the same. I was just talking to a first generation Mexican the other night who was fully in favor of a wall and thought that the media's portrayal of Trump was sickening.

First of all, what you said about TRump is bullshit. He never said what you spoke about. It was a big fucking LIE by the fake news media. It is also a lie about all Mexicans hating Trump. In addition, you are going to see many more black folks are going to vote for Trump in 2020. Why? Because...…..ITS ALL ABOUT THE ECONOMY, STUPID

The idea that all minorities should hate Trump is not some small idea. It's mainstream and is repeated in the media dozens of times every day. The whole "this was just an isolated incident" argument only works when it's actually ttue.

I know that there are some very severe differences in the Hispanic community over Trump. One of my best friends is Mexican and he was saying the other day that several good friends of his won't talk to him anymore because he voted for and supported Trump. Organizations like La Raza(the Race) are very militant and promote stuff like making California a Mexican only country.

So there are conflicts going on right now within the Mexican community as well as conflicts going on between blacks and Hispanics. In this area the conflict is about jobs. Illegal immigrants take jobs away from many black Americans or undercut their wages and this is a very hot issue also.

Then also, a lot of people do not know the fact that many Hispanics are very anti-abortion, especially Hispanic Catholic women. These women also typically take care of the family's budget and probably appreciate more income coming into their family from a good economy.

WHere is the "ingratiation"? Guess what, both white Conservatives and Black Conservatives believe that people are STUPID to vote Democrat. I sure do. Why shouldn't a black man criticize the Democratic position(s)? You sure are self righteous to call for the condemnation of blacks who do not think like you do. You sure will be outraged when Trump gets about 15% of the black vote at least in his next election. Will all of these black voters be Uncle Toms in your estimation?

If any of them say "_____ should vote Republican," I would disagree with them because individuals have different situations and values. But context matters here. You know as well as I do that there is an assumption that minorities should all vote Democrat, and that belief has existed for as long as I have been alive. Sowell and Elder are trying to fight against that myth, but they are in a very small minority. It would be different if black people already primarily voted Republican and Elder and Sowell were saying the same things they say now.

Very well put. I honestly believe that there will be inroads to the black vote and I think that it is Trump's pro economy policies. Not Republican policies, but rather populist decisions toward the better good.

THe fact that you bring up rolling back affirmative action programs and also demand to see the implementation of policies to "help blacks" seems to me that you want some crutches to help navigate the big bad world out there. I say those days and crutches are not needed anymore. People have to go way beyond this false notion that US is a racist country where minorities are persecuted. How about stepping up and challenging oneself not insisting on crutches and handouts? That is the only way any person gets ahead in this world, no matter what the color of his skin is.
