Wow, this is painful. First one I've ever had. The doctor was amazed that I ripped the in grown part off without anesthetic and told me never to do it again.

I'm on antibiotics and pain killers (nothing good). Never realized how bad these could get. My toe looked like a tomato yesterday.

I had one about 15 years ago and dug it out myself. Nasty stuff.
I hate going to the doctor.
I took an old pair of shoes and cut out the big toe portion so as not to put any pressure on it as it healed. I empathize.

I haven’t had an ingrown toenail but got a splinter under a big toe nail many moons ago. God, that was fucking painful, had to cut the nail off and that damn toe hurt for months as the new nail grew in. I hope I never get an actual ingrown but if I do I will maintain this level of intoxication throughout the recovery.

There's a simple procedure for the big toes to kill some of the nail bed right along the sides. So the nails grow out with about a 1/16th inch spacing. Takes about 10 minutes, and you have to take an antiobiotic for a couple of days, and it takes a few days to heal up so reduced activity. But it doesn't hurt at all.

I had both big toes done a year apart about 18 years ago, and haven't had problems since.

Being kinda broke a few months ago, I decided to pick at an ingrown toenail. Ended up bending and tearing the ingrown portion out and cutting it off.

Dealt with it again today. No problemo.
