There are no easy answers to this. The fact remains that as a country we spend about twice as much as a percentage of GDP as countries with single payor systems. And by most measures, we get worse outcomes. Then if you do Medicare for all, you will underpay providers vs what they get today from private payors. I am not sure the current construct of hospitals and doctors groups could operate at Medicare reimbursement rates. The private payors are subsidizing government care right now.

The problem with that is the total US military spending over that same 10 year period would be projected at $7 trillion (Trump proposes about $700 billion per year) so even if you cut the US military budget to $0 you then run a $25 trillion plus deficit on this program alone.

Yes we should cut military spending, I'd argue even 50%, but no cuts to it will come close to funding this program.

These studies often say that Medicare would save on administrative costs compared to that of private insurance, but the problem with reduced oversight is that fraud goes through the roof. Insurance companies are often accused of being a pain in the ass, but part of that scrutiny is to guard against fraud.

The rest of the world is getting a free rider benefit. Certainly that is the case for pharm medicines. We have unregulated prices, which allows companies to recover the R&D costs to develop drugs. The rest of the world holds those costs down. Then you take the cost to become a doctor. We already have a primary physician shortage that would be made much worse if you took away 20% of their income.
