A lot of betas in this thread unable to properly train a dog.

Fact: Pit bulls do not bite more often or misbehave more often than any other breed. FACT: Huskies make up the majority of attacks and fatalities in Canada.

Are Huskies treated the same way as pit bulls? You're trained to accept pit bulls as some dangerous breed because they were / are used for dogfighting. Any mistreated dog can be vicious. There is no pit bull problem.

Alot of these pro pitbull sites refer to them as nanny dogs. Basically the message is "My pits are good with my kids so what's the problem?" Well that settles it, I guess we were all wrong about the breed after all.

I like all dogs, even pits, but the delusion about the breed has gotten out of control. I'm seeing more pits all the time in my neighborhood that are being walked by people who clearly shouldn't own one.

I do not know what the conclusion is but the local Humane Society here is full of them. I was looking to possibly rescue a dog and that was easily the majority.

I usually check out my local humane society every few weeks just to see what they have and the dogs on hand are usually 75% pit bulls, and I have been looking for the past couple of years. Kind of sad actually. I think some of them are good looking dogs but I wouldn't risk adopting one ever.

This is why we still need kill shelters. Not every dog can have a forever home as fucked up as that sounds.

I bet more people in Canada are killed by Bear or Moose than in the US.

Do you currently own a dog? I'm guessing since you do some travelling for work and what not you do not.

I see more tourist women now bringing their dogs on vacation. It’s just them and their dog nobody else. I guess ppl these days who have given up on finding a human significant other are replacing that with a dog or pet.

Pit bulls are dangerous to me. I’m not a fan Of
Dogs but think sometimes if I had one it may change my mind.

But they are carriers of filth and disease so I avoid them.

I'm in the against pitbulls camp but with reason:
After graduation my roommate got one and I was around it a lot. Never saw any real issues, it was a good dog. My roommate gets married, still see the dog when hanging out. Wife gets pregnant still see the dog all the time. At this time, I leave the room to use the bathroom and come back and the dog lunges at me and bites my hand and was trying to continue the attack as my roommate is laying on top of the dog. This is in the span of two years, the dog wasn't senile, they think it was getting protective around the pregnant mom. I told them they might want to think about getting rid of it. They eventually did but only after the dog attacked another person. You truly never know what would set them off.

I'll train any dog any day, but that doesn't mean everyone can or should even try.

The volume of bites isn't the point. Chihuahuas have more bites than any other dog breed, but no one gives a shit because they're Chihuahuas. A pit bull can and will kill most people if they ever feel the need... children especially. There are only certain people capable of responsibly owning them.

Huskies are a notoriously difficult dog breed. But I did lol when you listed the number one killer in Canada. Did you look that up or just know it offhand?

I currently do not own a dog. My apartment complex does not allow it. The traveling for work will be something to work around but is not the preventing factor at the moment. I should be back to owning a dog in about a year from now.

I looked it up. But not specifically - it came up when describing how pitbull attacks are proportionately lower than various other breeds.

Yep. When I was about 8 yrs old we had a small mutt that stayed inside most of the time and did not bother anyone. One day I was outside in the backyard playing with a few friends and I hear my mother in the front yard let out a scream. My mom was taking the dog for a walk on a leash when a pit bull came at the dog. My mom picked up our dog and the pit bull grabbed a hold of the dog while in my mothers arms. She let out a scream for help. My father was at work. Thankfully a couple neighbors heard her scream and came to help. They finally were able to get the pit bull off our dog, but it took a lot. They were beating and kicking that thing. It damn near ripped our dogs leg off. She had to have a ton of stitches. To this day I am gunshy anytime I see a pit bull.

Thats the thing. Like leash said you can beat the thing over the head with a pipe and it may not release it's grip. Huskies are super strong as well, but their strength is for pulling sleds not biting.

But sure, renowned dog expert who doesn't currently own a dog IMU can definitely explain whats up.

I've seen it happen a couple times at a dog park. There is almost nothing you can do. Two pits got into it once, and we were literally playing tug of war to get them off each other. The one almost died - there was blood everywhere. We sprayed water on them, kicked them, tugged on its ears (not me - fuck that shit), and nothing worked. It eventually just let go. I have heard that goosing them is the best method, but that was after this incident.

With large certainty I believe I've had more dogs than most on this board. I guess it is up to you to state you believe I would have forgotten all about it in the last few years.

Cool story.

Doesn't necessarily mean you are qualified to own or train a pit. I sure as hell know I'm not.

These guys were bashing that thing with shovels and rakes and it still did not want to let loose. They finally hit it in the jaw enough that it let loose. My father was pissed when he got home and found out about it. Then there was a whole ordeal of getting the owners to pay for the vet bills. My father told them they were lucky he was not home or he would have sliced their dogs throat.

But deaths are proportionately high.

A 2018 report issued by DogsBite.org shows that over 35 dog breeds contributed to 433 deaths in a 13-year period. Pit bulls contributed to 66% of these deaths, followed by rottweilers with 10%.

Shout out to the dog owners that get in the fray to rescue their dogs. I've never been a pet guy (couldnt have em in our condo growing up) but I always respect someone willing to lay it all on the line for their dog.

Sounds like you have some dog experience. I didn't grow up with dogs but have owned 3 of the same breed for the past 13 years. The last one I got
as a puppy. I did everything I knew how from the get go, taking him to obedience classes, trying to get him socialized, even taking him to doggie day
care once a week to get used to other animals. I wanted so badly for him to get along with other dogs and be friendly. He is not friendly to other dogs at all. I mostly blame myself that maybe I could have done more somehow or continued training but I didn't. The dog loves his family and doesn't trust anyone he doesn't know. Makes for a good guard dog but I have to be ultra careful when I walk him or take him anywhere in public. I pretty much have to have the old Marine 1000 yard stare and know where everyone and everything is around me. Still love the dog but that is just the way I have to be with him. That is how I would feel if I had a Pit Bull, especially a rescue in which I was not privy to its upbringing.

Of course you are not. The dog can sense that you are not in control. That would be any dog; not just pit bulls. Pit bulls are great dogs. All dogs are great dogs.

A rescue will always be tougher. The dog will likely have developed triggers that you would never think to consider, but you learn to work through it. Most dogs can eventually adapt and become great pets.

I'm looking forward to when I have to worry about this stuff again.

I would say that at least half of all dog owners are uninformed, too. They do all sorts of dumb things, but perhaps the most frequent I see is when they bring a dog into a dog park with a leash on. That's a recipe for disaster. The dog on the leash can't run, so it will get very defensive. Of most of the dog fights I've seen, it's because people did that. Then there are people who allow their dogs to go around humping the other dogs. I've even seen people laugh about it. That is dominant behavior. These people should not own bully breeds.

I'm not claiming to be Cesar Milan, but you can tell the dogs who are "off" or not trained properly just by observing the rest of the dogs. They all treat the outcasts differently.

312 knows what I'm talking about.

These dog parks sound pretty fuckin crazy

It sounds weird, but they are kinda crazy. I don't go as much as I used to, but it gets all weird there. I'd be lying if I told you I didn't enjoy the drama. There are lots of people and dogs who have no business being in a dog park. The dogs are all off-leash... it's not supposed to be for dogs that have behavioral issues, but no one seems to give a shit.
