I am also a dog lover, but the people who wax poetic about pit bulls are misguided.

A common phrase is "it's not their fault." I agree 100%. It's humans' fault for breeding them and training them to kill. But that provides little solace when their jaws are locked on your 5-year-old's throat. Not all pit bulls are "bad", but the problem is if they are, they can kill in seconds. Ever tried to tear two pit bulls away from each others death grip? It's impossible. The only possible solution is to stick your fingers up its asshole, and that's still not a guarantee.

That's also how confrontations were broken up at Lakemoorfest.

That's a recipe for disaster. The dog on the leash can't run, so it will get very defensive. Of most of the dog fights I've seen, it's because people did that. Then there are people who allow their dogs to go around humping the other dogs. I've even seen people laugh about it. That is dominant behavior. These people should not own bully breeds.

I'm not claiming to be Cesar Milan, but you can tell the dogs who are "off" or not trained properly just by observing the rest of the dogs. They all treat the outcasts differently.

Dumbasses at the dog park are the worst. I was there with my ten pound French bulldog one year old on Monday alone. This woman comes in with a poodle twice the size. Of course even though we have a double gate that allows you to take your dog off leash, she walks it in on the leash. My dog runs up to say high and of course the dog barks, barks not yelps. The woman yells "hey!" and then picks it up (only exacerbating her dogs anxiety and showing weakness) and let's out a feeble attempt to kick my dog away. It took me all of my control to not call her a dumbass bitch. Insteady I politely said sorry, for my fucking tiny puppy Frenchie the murderer, and left rather than risk anything else.

The fucking dog park should be invite only. Only time in the last almost year since of socializing with strangers/other dogs have I had an issue.

God, I hate those people. Their dogs would be absolutely fine if they weren't such excitable freaks. The dogs feed off their energy. It's usually women, too (but not always). There was a woman who used to frequent a dog park we went to who would freak out when the dogs would sniff each other's asses. How is that even possible? That's what dogs do every single time they meet each other - how would it make someone nervous? Or, perhaps more importantly, how is someone who gets nervous over something like that coming to a dog park?

Bulldogs? Surprised huskies kill so many Kanaydians....the only adult victim of a husky attack (22 yr old female) in the US in the period covered above needed a pit bull buddy to pull off the feat. All the other husky fatalities in the US were under the age of 5.

I'm gonna take a wild guess that the dog in the OP was unaltered, as is the case the overwhelming majority of the time. Backyard breeding should be illegal. If you want to make that pit bull specific, fine, I'm not going to fight you on it, and with exception of certified breeders* neuter/spay should be mandatory. I don't think you need to restrict ownership to only top dog trainers, but I'd be fine with mandating some sort of additional requirement for ownership. Any reputable rescue is going to do a ton of due diligence to make sure dogs are being placed in the right homes, and while I don't think there's any way to get aggregate numbers on this, I would imagine the percentage of major incidents with pit bulls placed through rescue are lower than the percentage of incidents of general medium+ sized dogs.

And I know many of you find the militant suburban moms annoying, but many of them are involved in rescue, and it's hard not to get defensive when you see the abuse so many of these dogs have gone through. I've been affiliated with a pit rescue for the last six years, and we've taken in dogs that have been abandoned, starved, beat to all shit with a two by four, scalded with acid, set on fire, and even one found hanging from a tree by a belt. Even in those cases, those dogs been successfully placed in homes where they are thriving. On the flip side, of course there those that have show behavior that have made them unadoptable, and responsible shelter directors, humane societies, and rescues should make the right decision in those cases.

Our rescue, who I promise will not one day decide to maul me to death. I know, one can still dream.

Good old dogsbite.org. Where are the underlying statistics for these tables sourced from? Various studies?

I lost my shit on the dog park once when I was there with my mom's dog a few years ago. Some people were BABYSITTING a pitbull and the thing chased down and latched itself to the neck of this poor mutt. Blood, stitches. I wanted to throw down. Guy wouldn't give me his name until I threatened to call the cops while he gf was bleeding because of the dog.

Of course this behavior could've been seen coming from a mile away because this dog was clearly aggressive but they were all "oh it's fine haha". Wasn't fine.

Other dog was ultimately ok. Still, people are so dumb.

From CDC, Center for Disease Control (as noted in the stats...).

This report also examines the changing metrics in U.S. fatal dog attacks since the CDC last examined this issue (1979 to 1998).

If I'm reading this right, and I am, the CDC last examined the issue in 1998. The numbers past 1998 are not sourced from the CDC.

In all of 2017, 10 people died from pit bull attacks.
In one shooting in Las Vegas in 2017, 58 people died from gunfire that was primarily from semi-automatic rifles.

Sounds like no one should be worried about pit bulls either...

Pitbulls are not effective attack dogs.

Pit bull mauls woman to death on Far South Side, is killed by police
Megan Crepeau

A 57-year-old woman died Saturday after being attacked by a dog on the Far South Side, Chicago police said.

She was in the 10100 block of South Calhoun Avenue in the South Deering neighborhood about 2:30 p.m. when a large pit bull attacked her, biting her on the neck and throughout the body, police said.

The dog charged at responding police officers, who shot and killed the dog, police said. It is unknown who owned the dog.

The woman was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

god damit. RIP. Biting her on the neck? Fucking Lions do that to kill their prey.

If I were the NRA, I would promote carrying guns to kill pit bulls who attack more than any other type of crime.
