What do you guys think of the movie?

It seems kinda silly at first because it appears to be about a team who won 20 games in a row but did jack shit in the postseason but really at it's core it's a business movie.

I've always enjoyed it even with it's faults.

The scene with the elderly scout talking about a player's (I forget who) lack of attractiveness may be a result of a lack of confidence is one of my favorite scenes.

So Moneyball, yay or nay?

Hawk is right, it completely avoided the benefits of a helluva starting rotation.

But it's a good fiction movie.

Yeah, it’s ridiculous it completely ignores all their best players. Garbage movie imo.

Same here, the rotation was ridiculously good. Jonah Hill is annoying.

Nope. The key players on that team were Scott Hatteberg and Chad Bradford.

Wasn't Bradford in the Sox system?

Yeah, looks like he actually pitched about 30 games for them.

Yeah, didn't Billy go get Hatteberg from his job as a janitor? I mean, no one could possibly think of making a catcher into a 1st baseman.

Agreed on how it ignored the great starting pitching of that team.

Still...it got the point across and was enjoyable. Could have been better but it's a decent movie.

The book fails in that its author became infatuated with his subject matter and lost his ability to be objective.

Billy Beane is the most overrated GM in the history of sports. As others alluded to, the success of the A's had nothing to do with Moneyball and everything to do with The Big Three.

I liked the first part of the book when he described the origins of SABR and Bill James's work, but then it got boring.

That's overstating it in the other direction.

Replacing Giambi for pennies on the dollar definitely helped that team win.

He kind of batched that one too. He chose the wrong 1st baseman(Hattegerg vs Pena)..though Hattegurg was slightly better in 2002, Pena was much better the following 5 years or so.

Randomly watching on Starz this morning.

Forgot how good of movie this is.

Not great, but a good baseball movie about the shift to analytics.

I think about this a lot because I always see Rizzo hitting it right into the shift. I wish major league hitters would fully adjust and take this crap out of the game. I also wish a team would come along and do more see ball hit ball instead of working the count and swinging for the fences. The three outcome at bats are annoying.

3 options:

1. Hitters learn how to hit better

2. Ban the shift

3. Add shift restrictions by painting one or two foot long white lines at the start of the outfield grass indicating just how far an infielder can move to one side or the other before the ball is put in play.

Yep. Why regulate the shift? Would you require pitchers to throw fastballs to a hitter that can’t hit the curve?

Those are two different things tho.

Yes option #1 is the answer, but the hitters playing long ball doesn’t seem to have an end in sight.

Today Abreu purposely hit a groundball to the open hole on the right side for a RBI.

#1 is and always be the answer. If you want to be an outstanding professional hitter, you'll adjust.

I think the statistics show that in the long run, the offense benefits more from trying to hit over the shift than slapping around it. There's a reason that the defense is giving that space and it isn't because they believe that batters can't hit it over there. It's that they're willing to accept the single if a guy wants to go that route. It's a better result than a double off the wall. They want the powerful pull hitter to try to break the shift by slapping it to the other side. Doing so wouldn't be the victory for the offense that people believe it would.

Not making an out is still rule #1.

Just a few times a month I'd like to see a guy like Rizzo just bunt toward the left side of the infield. If they're going to give you a free base just take it. You'd be happy if he roped one past the shortstop in shallow right in the shift right? Why not just take that free base? Its ego. There shouldn't be a place for that in a professional team sport.

Steve Stone wss talking about this about three weeks ago. It may have been when they were playing the Cubs and Schwarber was up.

And putting lines in the infield won't do anything. You just move your RF up into the 2B rover position, move your CF to right, and move one of your infielders back out to left center. It would still be three to one side of second base and four to the other.

Well then make the lines count against both infield and outfield.

Trust me.
