For some, there will never be a right way for people to protest. It'll always be the wrong place, the wrong time, or the wrong method. If the protests were outside the Daley Center, they'd be blocking a dance troupe that was supposed to be there that day and depriving the Loop of culture and young people of opportunities to perform, two things they care about as much as traffic on Lake Shore Drive around Belmont. If the protests were in Englewood, they'd be stupid for doing them there, too, probably.

I agree with this.

I know I heard the TIF situation mentioned in some interview they had on WGN9 this morning.

The City is flat broke but somehow we can hand Sterling Bay a big fat check.

Have you driven around the City lately? There are potholes everywhere the size of moon craters. Even on Michigan Avenue! But somehow we find money for all this extra stuff.

The Obama Library is replacing park land. Okay, that's controversial, but what's done is done. And maybe the library will be a benefit to that community, though I doubt it. But I wonder how many people are paying attention to this nifty trick. There will be a Chicago Public Library branch in the Presidential Library. That's a great story. Sounds awesome, right? To me it just sounds like a way to sneak public dollars into the project after promising none would be used.

Is putting a branch of the Chicago Public Library in there also a way to artificially inflate attendance numbers? There were claims an Obama Library would outdraw the MSI, Field Museum, and Planetarium despite the fact that attendance at other Presidential Libraries did not outdraw those places.

I was distracted for the part about TIF scams  The extent people will go to make excuses.

Detective:
"You were the gunman in a drive-by shooting that killed 3 people including an innocent 8 year old boy. Why would you do this? What was your motive for taking three human lives???"

Suspect:
"Well officer, if it were not for tax increment financing I believe none of this would.have happened"

Come on guys. Be real with yourselves. Bullshit others all you want but at least be honest with yourself. Want a fun fact? All 50 states have TIF. Even Canada too. It's not an excuse.

Not for racist comments they don't. He has been called out for being an Uber scam artist far more often.

There is much more pushback on people that call out racists than there is on the racism itself.

Even I called America out for the trash comment.

America calls out bullshit on the black community and isn't a fan of homos. Get over it.

in nearly five pages of posts, exactly ONE person has acknowledged that as planned, it will inconvenience them. Others have taken their usual positions, acting as scalded cats and a small minority have reasonably taken the position that protest is a good American trait and choose to stay above the odd fray. JORR, who I can see as possibly inconvenienced by this, appears to have wisely made other plans and correctly cited a major theme of the protest, that an even smaller minority even acknowledges, if not agrees with.

But more than anything, it appears to be the usual midday muck of soyboy/cuck charges that some learned here on 4Chan/Reddit/or some other tinfoil hat site that a bunch of bigoted incels feel the need to gin up.

Except for the attempts at a TIF discussion and a few other well targeted/funny shots, this is pretty damned dull.

I'm sure there were MANY folks that didn't much care for the disruptions caused by MLK, et al. If only they'd just stayed at home and maybe wrote a very terse note, I'm sure that would've worked out better for them all in the long run and racism would have almost vanished by now.

How glaringly stupid does a person have to be to bitch about something inconvenient that doesn't even remotely inconvenience them on any level?

If it were in the black community would you notice? Would you care enough to complain as you are doing now?

Maybe that it is the point.

If it were in the black community, would this march have such an adversarial name?

I agree with this.

Within the context of free speech and anyone's or any groups right to protest doesn't there have to be some minimal restriction for safety's sake? Marching old school style down State ST. seems radically more safe than shutting down LSD in some haphazard way. Does it not to you guys regardless of who is protesting?

What are you going to accomplish telling people who commit almost zero (its honestly close to zero) street crime to stop committing street crime? If it were white people doing all this there would be a point but whites are responsible for none of it. People in Lincoln Park are not going to be like "you know I was gonna do that drive-by later, but the demonstration on Lake Shore Drive this afternoon changed my mind".

Again its not a protest. You can look up the quotes by the people who organized it. Its a punishment. They want to inflict pain on people who they see as having painless existences. Let's call this what it is.

Why does it matter if people on the Northside notice this march? Think they don't know there is a lot of gun violence elsewhere in the city?

The problem certainly seems to be that the police are treated like the enemy, and no one talks to them when murders are committed. That seems like a cultural change to me that I don't know how to make happen.

Exactly.

RPB and Frank nailed it earlier. This way this protest is being sold is "spread the pain." That makes no sense. It's like social media antagonism.

The march last week down the Dan Ryan was presented totally differently. A lot of people here supported that.

You can be a smart ass if you like I don't care. I had a genuine question about whether LSD was good for their sake and drivers. I am not making a convenience argument or even judgment on who is protesting.

I am not sure how it is now but you used to have a permit to march in Chicago. Obviously, these seem to be much more of a quick/flexible thing than that. They blocked roads here in Pittsburgh in recent weeks for protest and luckily it went fine.

Someone and they may not even be in opposition might run over a bunch of these people and that would be a real problem.

They want it to escalate. Its very obvious what the motives are, but people are taking their predictable sides because they are afraid of looking racist. Like its racist to look at something meant to ratchet racial tension in the city up a few degrees and say that its a perhaps a really bad idea.

I would like to publicly apologize for asking what the goal of the protest is. I didn't realize that was over the line.

Given that a) I've never talked about joining in that protest, and b) that a couple of days ago I expressed my skepticism about the protest leaders, your entire post is misguided and without a salient point.

Well, I do not blame you. It would be my assumption that if a group was protesting they might want to let peopl eknow what they are drawing attention to.
