I know very little about this type of thing, but it does seem like Smith is being a bitch about this. They really need to get this damn thing moving!

Bears should tell him if your not signed in a day or two, enjoy making no cash this year.

Maybe Al Harris and Todd Bell can give him an intervention.

They don't have that kind of leverage.

Loving football doesn't mean that you ignore the business aspect of it. Clearly the Bears are more interested in taking his guaranteed money than they are making sure they give their team the best chance to win Week 1.

Yea there's blame on both sides here. He needs to call his agents and tell them he wants to play and get to get something done. This impasse is inexcusable and he is a person in a positon to fix it.

The Bears are a multi billion dollar organization, I can't blame a player for wanting protect their guarantees. That being said, I am certain that there is a date where his agents know they'll have to cave if the Bears don't blink first. I'm thinking August 20th

Of course there is. It's shameful that a guy just about everyone believes will be a stud isn't playing.

If Mitch sucks, it really doesn’t matter if Smith plays football this year or Parcheesi.

That being said, it’s so Bears to be the last fucking team to sign their first round pick.

Its actually not. They are among the first teams to sign their draft picks every year.

Primarily because they haven't needed to negotiate anything.

I’ve watched the front office of this team make lousy decisions for the better part of thirty years.

Let me restate, it’s so Bears to be the last fucking team to sign their first round pick in the first year of a new head coach of a team being ran by a GM who hasn’t yet proven he’s up to the job.

Go Bears...

I like what Pace has done in the draft the last 2 seasons. He's still learning on the job but things appear to be headed in the right direction. He inherited absolute crap and had to endure the Fox retirement years.

The Fox years kinda proves the point. I doubt that Fox was the coach Pace wanted, but that’s what he got. All of this had Phillips and upper mgmt written all over it. I’m just sick and tired of the McLaskies. I want football people making football decisions.

I had to use football a lot because we’re talking about football. I’m convinced, if we got Phillips in the building and got his football information, there would be nothing there. I’m just sick of it.

Pace is a dumbass. It cant really be denied, the Meredith situation sealed it. To not either keep Meredith or get draft compensation out of it was the last straw for me. He's a complete idiot.

But Nagy isn't and as time goes on Nagy will take over the team in all respects. Pace was put at the kids table for the draft this year. His role will get smaller as time goes on. He will have a good legacy as being the guy who drafted (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky and hired Nagy, but the writing is on the wall. Pace hired his replacement.

He's the only guy drafted not signed, his agency had 10 first rounders.

I can't imagine what the problem is. They were discussing on Mac and Parkins yesterday and it is not exactly confirmed what the exact sticking point is. Why would this agency hold up the Bears and not the other teams?

IF Smith wants to keep monies paid even if he is suspended for bad behavior off of the field, then he is dead wrong.

Of course. That should be true of game checks etc. It sounds like he is trying to set a precedent that a team cannot try to get signing bonus "guaranteed" money back.

The player isn't wrong but it shouldn't be hard to not do bad things off the field.

How MANY people here would gladly, or even sign a check at all, for someone who made poor choices and was unable to show up for work because of those choices.

It's not guaranteed money then though. They have roster bonuses and performance bonuses designed to take care of that.

So, the player isn't wrong. However, the fight over "If I go get arrested you can take my money" doesn't seem worth the potential of derailing your rookie year.
