I've been pretty much a happy go lucky type of guy my entire life. As I get older not as much but still in some ways.

Ive always had a positive spirit within me where I really don't get down much.

But recently, say in the last 6 months or so, I've been getting suicidal thoughts. I don't think I'd ever do it, but this has been all new to me.

And now w/ this new office job where I'm experiencing stress, it's adding on to it.

Other than paying a therapist, is there something I can do self help wise? Can you get depression later in life? or can you get to be bi polar? I dont think I am bi polar since I really don't get high on many things.

Suicide wise, I don't think I'd actually do it, I'm too much of a pussy. But maybe it's a depression or just fed up with life right now. New responsibilities and family stuff going on back on the mainland. Feel like the deck is stacked against me.

That's cool that you're posting about this. Always good to reach out. I am sorry you are running up against this....

Therapy is supposedly the best long-term deterrent against depression. You should probably also talk to an MD as soon as you can. (Some of us are actually professionals in this area, I think, and they will know more.)

However, right now, you can make sure that you are eating right and getting exercise.

I think this is all normal, especially when starting a new job! Hang in there. But do get some help and make sure you are taking care of yourself and spending time with friends (in person, on the phone, online, whatever).

Feeling like the deck is stacked against you . . . man, I can relate. I bet tons of people on here can. So I think people will be listening, which is good. You're definitely not alone. Thanks for reaching out--takes guts.

Sunshine is a help. If you dont want hardcore meds like the shit I use, try St Johns Wort. Natures Prozac.
Therapy is good or just talk to a friend or family member you can trust.
You can also use the support groups here :https://www.nami.org/

I once told my dad I was thinking about killing myself. He told me that he used to date a Jewish chick whose family was worth ~25-50mil or something, but she dumped him to mess up the hopes of a work-free/lite rest of his life. He told me to come back to him when I had a proper reason to kill myself.

Unfortunately in real life I don't have any friends. As a result of choosing a life of hermitage all these years. I thought the new job I can make a friend but not sure how long that will take. I do have a friend I guess but he's out of the country and won't be back till December.

I'll re-read your posts, thanks for your help.

Not sure if this is serious, but if it is, call the hotline. Don't do something dumb.

With the amount you post on the board (nothing wrong with it), it seems you are searching for some type of community. If I were you, I would start with joining some type of church (even if you are not a believer). I would also search for some other types of community types through the park district or library. Also, I would visit your primary care for some depression meds.

No, I 'm not going to off myself. I just get these thoughts now and again. Never had this before, just new.

I wn't call and waste someone's time who really needs help.

Maybe it's a phase. Just hard right now.

It takes a helluva lot to actually express those kinds of thoughts. Stones even. Depression comes in many forms with many triggers and every age. Finding a channel where you can speak freely is huge, as is exercise and getting out. But please appreciate that there are completely unique solutions for everyone. I sincerely hope you will at least feel a little better than yesterday and even better tomorrow.

I really hope that this isn't a bit. Talk to someone IMMEDIATELY. I posted the hotline number. You should probably logout and use it.

Most definitely. It seems like you need that feeling of community. At least you have it here a little bit. Cashman's advice is good--throw yourself into something that you believe in. (I actually did this over the past few months.) You need to take the first steps to get involved in a community, though.

HawaiiYou,

You are not the only one that chooses a "no friends" lifestyle. It's the life I chose years ago,but I have my wife and kids to talk to. To have thoughts like suicide certainly isn't healthy and you should seek outside help not messageboard help. Stay positive and find a hobby or two to keep your mind occupied. Good Luck!

I called that number and talked to someone. I feel so much better. It helped talking w/ a real life person. but this is temporary. I dont know about therapy, its just too costly. I think I need to see how far this feeling will last. If it' gets worse I will need to seek medical help. I really dont want to take drugs. I'll check out that home remedy you mentioned.

Keep on getting help. You don't want any thoughts like that to linger even if it seems small now. Lots of stories of people who only told friends at the small level of feelings getting worse and then not telling anyone.

I had plenty of friends at work, from school and my wife's family and friends. I just wasn't interested. I worked 12 hour night shifts most of my career and that takes a toll.

Much love HawaiiYou. I agree with you about drugs. Best to go natural but sometimes that doesn’t work for people. A good diet and regular exercise (any exercise) does wonders. Look up the vitamin 5-HTP. Also there’s a great book called The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt. Check it out!

Do you have a family history of suicide?

Do you have a firearm in your home?

Have you ever worn crocs?

If you answered "Yes" to all, well, you're probably not reading this because actuarially speaking you should already be a statistic.

Maybe you heard about Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade's suicides and thought, 'Hmm, if I wanna be cool/hip like Bourdain and Spade, maybe I should look into this suicide thing" Hopefully GQ/Cosmo will put out a cover story about what to wear when offing ourselves and what wines to pair with various methods of self-annihilation.

How do you know anyone here is real. We could all be bots programmed to entertain/distract you; a baudrillardian simulacrum of legit internet communities.
