Maybe it's a phase. Just hard right now.

A few thoughts:

1. You aren’t wasting anyone’s time on those hotlines. Those hotlines would rather field 20 calls from someone who likely will not hurt themselves rather than risk one person who will kill themselves not call because they do not want to waste time.

2. Please look into group therapy, often cheaper than individual therapy and you can get into a good group of other peers who might be experiencing some of the same fears, anxieties, and emotions that you are.

3. Even if it is just a phase, it is an unhealthy phase to be in, do yourself a solid and get yourself out of it as quickly and safely as possible.

someone called into howard recently wanting some advice for dealing with depression and didn't have medical insurance yet so he didn't know how to afford it. a guy called in and recommended AA. you don't have to be an alcoholic to go, it's free, and it's just one big support group.

What I'm about to say is extremely reductive. But tough shit.

God gave you life. Only He has the right to take it. There is no "dignity" in taking your own life. No matter the circumstances, whether terminal disease or the intolerable mental pain of life, the final act of suicide is a re-gift, a thumb in the eye to the Guy that gave it to you.

Play it out. THAT'S dignified.

Except there is no such thing as god or the man in the sky or Santa Clause or the Tooth Ferry.. its all the same! God and religion is a figment of your imagination. One thing you notice in nations with lower education the more they believe in religion and mysticism to explain them being human and their existence.

On the thoughts of Suicide from the original poster, please seek help and do not go through any rash decisions on temporary pain. Stress and feeling down is temporary but death is permanent. Please call the suicide prevention line 1-800-273-8255 or seek some professional help which there is no shame in doing so.

This is the epitome of ignorance. I debated Noam Chomsky in private correspondence on whether God exists and won. There's the cosmological argument of Thomas Aquinas, which goes "if the existence is true, then the first cause of existence has to be true." There's also the qabalistic argument of the Ain Soph Aur, which is also true for those enlightened enough to experience it. It's the eternal righteous light that God created that lies behind the curtain of matter. If that light exists as God's reflection, then God exists.

I would recommend prayer to my friend, Hawaii You. Loneliness is a common cause of depression. Even to have one friend is better than having none. You have friends here.

If you actually have something worthwhile to say to the old Professor, he will write you back from his MIT e-mail address.

The problem with Noam is that he's so set in his ways with his rationalist thinking, he's very close-minded about God, even when faced with irrefutable arguments.

Indeed, my debate with him did happen. I was trying to convince him, because I think he's a good guy.

Believing in a personal God is a lot different than saying something can't come from nothing and that the universe was built on a razor's edge.

I think a scientist would regard certain aspects of science to inform their personal views. Say, Francis Collins, for example. He wrote a book on the circumstantial evidence. And it's very detailed.

All I'm saying is believe what you want based on what you know and what you have sought out. Don't bring up the flying spaghetti monster drivel because it's very uninformed, very dumb, and very sheep-like.

They may. However, the very concept of "belief" without proof is irrational, so it wouldn't be shocking if some ignore the science.

Do you discount circumstantial evidence? There's plenty of it for a universe BUILT to bear life.

What does that mean by what does that mean?

Like it was built on a razor's edge for life to exist. Read a book or something if you're interested. I already recommended one.

What I mean is what I say. They are words arranged just so as to say what I mean.

She don't even love me like she did when I was younger (Get a hold of yourself, nigga!)
Suckin' on her chest just to stop my fuckin' hunger
I wonder, if I died, would tears come to her eyes?
Forgive me for my disrespect, forgive me for my lies
My baby mother's eight months, her little sister's two
Who's to blame for both of them? (Nah, nigga, not you)
I swear to God I want to just slit my wrists and end this bullshit
Throw the Magnum to my head, threaten to pull shit (Nigga, what the fuck?)
And squeeze until the bed's completely red (It's too late for this shit, man)
I'm glad I'm dead, a worthless fuckin' buddha head
The stress is buildin' up, I can't— I can't believe (Yo, I'm on my way over there, man)
Suicide's on my fuckin' mind, I wanna leave
I swear to God I feel like death is fuckin' callin' me
But nah, you wouldn't understand (Nigga, talk to me please, man!)
You see it's kinda like the crack did to Pookie in New Jack
Except when I cross over, there ain't no comin' back (Yo, I'ma call you when I get in the car)
Should I die on the train track like Ramo in Beat Street
People at the funeral frontin' like they miss me (Ayo, where your girl at, man?)
My baby mama kiss me, but she glad I'm gone (Yo, put your girl on the phone, nigga!)
She know me and her sister had somethin' goin' on
I reach my peak, I can't speak (Ayo, you listenin' to me, motherfucker?)
Call my nigga Chic, tell him that my will is weak (Ayo, c'mon, nigga)

I am glad you called. Call as often as you need to. They want to help.

And yes it is possible to get depression later in life. And you don't need to get high to suffer from bi-polar disorder. And while it is not common to develop it later in life, it can happen. It can be brought on by stress which is something you mentioned.

I would also add there is a Bi-Polar II that can be involved.

As someone who has struggled with mild depression over the years I’d agree that getting help is paramount. I did the shrink thing years ago (early 20’s) and it helped a lot (at least with the depression) as it helped me realize when I was slipping into that place. Exercise helps me a lot but you need to find what works for you. Talk to people, talk to the call line.. it’s all helpful. I hated asking for help. It is a weakness in me but in this case, I had to seek it. Don’t be afraid to ask, don’t feel like it’s not important to the people that are there.. it is. You are.

It has come to my attention that there was a study of people who were depressed and had sleep apnea. The depression improved for those whose sleep apnea was treated. People with sleep apnea stop breathing about 30 or times or more a minute when they are sleeping. If you snore you may want to look into getting it treated.

Also beyond medical treatment, exercise and social interaction are recommended for people struggling with depression.

I believe that. I am at 60x without treatment, basically on every breath, and I struggle with treatment when I have sinus, respiratory, or stomach issues. I can believe that depression can creep in because a person gets really run down physically and will power becomes very challenging.
