It's pretty graphic. Not like the sly innuendo and metaphor of years past. This is the shit they want your kids listening to and emulating.

It really is. I mean we had stuff like that (Blow Job Betty etc) but it wasnt main stream.

Cardi B's newest song straight up talks about sucking dick.

Yeah, I long for the good old days when Pop That Coochie was playing on the box 24/7.

I get the relativism that applies to most things but I honestly think mainstream music is objectively more shitty than years past.

I originally typed smutty but my auto-correct changed it. In any case, yeah I don't think this another case of "bck in my day"

Of course it is. Go look at the "popular" music when you were in your early 20s. Most of it was forgettable.

Now, when you can cherry pick 2-4 songs a year to build a catalog of songs and then throw in whatever you thought was good but not incredibly popular at time and you start to see the unrealistic expectation that today's music would match up with the music you think is good from multiple decades.

Or we could just all listen to The Beatles non-stop because all music after that can't compare.

Completely agree. It's more about how outrageous you are and how you look more than what you say than it was 20 to 30 years ago.

There's always been shitty popular music.

To clarify, my statement, Im not saying music now is bad. I think much of it is good.

But there is more hardcore type stuff in the mainstream now. We dont have heroes like Tipper Gore trying to stop it from being played.

Cardi B is fine for a female rapper.

You have to prove it to me. It seemed like there were far more people who had actual talent and actually said something worthwhile in their music back then.

Pick the year that you turned 20. Go look at the Billboard Top 100.

http://billboardtop100of.com/2002-2/

I actually like a lot of those songs on there but I know they aren't exactly masterpieces.

Chaz: My whole life, people have been cramming this classic-rock crap down my throat. Think I give a shit about the Beatles?

Ian: No offense, but today's music doesn't have a whole lot to say.

Chaz: Is that right? So you're gonna tell me that 'Purple Haze' says something?

Music today would sound “better” if it was filtered through the same cheezy, boring top 40 radio stations and an MTV that still played videos of the 80’s. Today you hear all the garbage you never would be exposed to 30 years ago thanks to YouTube and stuff.

What is this?

I agree but that is because we are of the same age. I doubt our parents would agree on the Nickleback/Puddle Of Mudd/Creed triumvirate.

The radio execs control the music and the radio stations control what is played. The artists take their cues from them. In order to get their music played on the radio they have to conform to what the radio execs want.

Back when hip hop took off artists like Cardi B would never have been played on the radio. Hell rap wasn't played on the radio if you weren't LL. This was the case in the late 80's up til about the mid to late 90's. You got your rap fix from watching videos and that was only about 30 mins - an hr a day.

Ooh, that 2002 is pretty bleak. I like "A Thousand Miles" a lot, though. 1997 was a very good year.

2006 has "Sexyback" and "Promiscuous," at least. I guess those are classics.

There are different genres of music that we like that our parents didn't like. Most of our parents complained about the pushing of the envelope and how explicit certain genres of music were. I'm not necessarily wagging my finger at artists pushing the envelope, I feel like the actual lyrics are mostly shitty.

Ooh, that 2002 is pretty bleak. I like "A Thousand Miles" a lot, though. 1997 was a very good year.

2006 has "Sexyback" and "Promiscuous," at least. I guess those are classics.

1997 was better but 2002 was good.

You have to prove it to me. It seemed like there were far more people who had actual talent and actually said something worthwhile in their music back then.
Pick the year that you turned 20. Go look at the Billboard Top 100.

I actually like a lot of those songs on there but I know they aren't exactly masterpieces.

That top 25 is really good

I agree but that is because we are of the same age. I doubt our parents would agree on the Nickleback/Puddle Of Mudd/Creed triumvirate.

There are different genres of music that we like that our parents didn't like. Most of our parents complained about the pushing of the envelope and how explicit certain genres of music were. I'm not necessarily wagging my finger at artists pushing the envelope, I feel like the actual lyrics are mostly shitty.

Hip hop/rap is going through a tough time right now. Lyrics aren't very important to this lot of fans.

The good stuff is still there, its just not as popular
