I believe Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas and A.C. Slater from Saved By The Bell are doing back-up dancing/singing.

I think she's been legend status for so long that I don't think all the weepiness is completely contrived.
That being said, I think the day Beyonce shuffles off this mortal coil will result in biblical Armageddon...

Beyonce has improved as a singer but Aretha had more talent in her toe than Beyonce will ever have.

In modern times we sure do manufacture legends in all areas of music.

Fresh Air replayed an interview with her from 1999. It was good.

I think you guys may have missed my sarcasm.
Sarge was implying that all the condolences were.....a bit much.
I just said wait until Beyonce dies if you want to see feigned idol mourning.

I guess you can't really blame Fox News for confusing Aretha with Patti LaBelle ... I mean, they all look alike, amirite?

No. I believe they were referring to someone called 'Retha Franklin.

And they called Alabama the Crimson Tide.

Either 76 is a lie or those are the hardest miles I have seen on a woman. She looked old 40 years ago in The Blues Brothers. I remember during her pop revival in the 80s thinking she was some sixty year old coot pretending that young men would want her.

Though she could really bring it back in the day considering she had two children before she turned 16 and was born into a life of such dark, incestuous sexual deviance that noted libertine Ray Charles had to look away (!) and that would shock even JORR's hero, the pedophile rapist Donald Trump.

Image

And perhaps most complicatedly of all, she came from a home where her father was a promiscuous gospel preacher whose church was a front for orgies which Ray Charles was to describe as a ‘sex circus’.

So questionable was his behavior that when Franklin became pregnant at the age of just 12 – her sexuality apparently awakened by the scene her father promoted - that rumors swirled around Detroit that the preacher was the father to her child.

In fact, he was not, but it was a reflection of his reputation rather than his daughter's that the rumors even surfaced. Writer David Ritz, co-author of Aretha’s white-washed autobiography fifteen years ago, decided that it was time the truth be told about the Queen’s life and work in RESPECT, by David Ritz, published by Little, Brown and Company, October 28.

It details the rise of the girl born in 1942 in Memphis to C.L. Franklin and his wife Barbara, and who moved when she was four to Detroit with her parents, two sisters and brother.

He set up shop at the New Bethel Baptist Church, at 4210 Hastings Street, and his daughter became a child prodigy in the gospel church.

By age seven, she could play big chords on the piano, church chords, and play a song perfectly after hearing it once.

Hastings Street is ground zero for the Aretha Franklin story, David Ritz writes.

I got a kick outta seeing how God’s people were going for it hard and heavy every which way
Ray Charles on the orgies which went on at C.L. Franklin's gospel church in Detroit
‘It was the point where Saturday night merged into Sunday morning and sin met salvation at the crossroads of African American musical culture. High on the Holy Ghost, dancing in the aisles of New Bethel, the saints celebrated the love of Christ.

'High on wine and weed, the party people celebrated the love of the flesh’.

It was saintly blues at night and bluesy gospel in the morning –the churches and the clubs were next to each other.

Ray Charles, who began on the R&B circuit in the early fifties, ran into the gospel groups on the road.

‘When it came to pure heart singing, they were mother*****s,’ he said.

‘When it came to pure sex, they were wilder than me – and that’s saying something. In those days I had a thing for orgies, but I had to be the only cat in the room with two or three chicks.

‘The gospel people didn't think that way. The cats liked it with the cats and the chicks liked it with the chicks and no one minded mixing it up this way or that.

‘I got a kick outta seeing how God's people were going for it hard and heavy every which way. I was just surprised to see how loose they were’.

Police said the shooting that happened in the 300 block of East Washington Street started with an argument.

News 3's Rachael Cardin spoke to a witness who said he heard the two people in a local barbershop arguing over whether or not Halle Berry played or would play Aretha Franklin in a movie.

Police said the fight turned physical and then one of the subjects, identified as 44-year-old Michael Jermell Hatton, produced a firearm, shooting the other man at least once outside the shop.

Both men got emergency medical assessment and treatment by Suffolk Fire & Rescue personnel before being transported to local hospitals for further treatment.

Franklin had previously wanted Berry to play her in an upcoming biopic, but Berry claimed she couldn't sing and wouldn't do the role justice, according to E News. Instead, Jennifer Hudson was tapped to play the Queen of Soul in the film.

Just caught Franklin doing 'You make me feel like a natural woman' from some Kennedy Center honors thing she did a few years ago at the end of Colbert. All I can say is wow.

I had never delved much into Aretha's career and was blown away when I saw her sit down at the piano and knock it out of the park in that video. Turns out she was pretty much a virtuoso pianist since childhood. She actually went to Juilliard in 1998 to study classical piano...just for the hell of it.

Overrated. It's fitting that Jennifer Hudson is portraying her in a movie as she as well has no concept of melody.

It is also just a little odd all the love for a great gospel singing woman when such a topic is out of favor in these modern times.

I think she really invented the entire style, including being termed diva, of all those hand waving 80s-90s female soloists

Oddly enough, I don't see much of Aretha's style in Whitney. No homo (unlike Whitney) but I really loved the way Whitney sang as well. Easily one of the best voices of my generation.

Agreed, and last night on Jimmy Fallon, we saw the torch passed from Aretha Franklin to Ariana Grande.

Her most famous work is not gospel music.

I was a big fan of Whitney as well as Anita Baker. In that generation I never thought Mariah Carey was a great singer. She was more of an amazing vocal gymnast or something. There are modern female singers that are not all just produced, created style over substance.

See my Mariah comment. That is what Ariana reminds me of. She is a cute kid though.
