I guess Biggsy doesn't realize that the Bears are only one player away....from being 7-9 instead of 6-10.

Probably because the cost is more than 1 first round draft pick + one of the largest contracts in NFL history.

Pace is pretty aggressive when it comes to getting his guy so I wouldn't rule anything out - this team does need a proven pass rusher, but between the asking price/salary, it does make any trade unlikely.

If only Pace hadn't given away draft picks for no reason it may have been a little easier to justify giving these up.

Bears fans/beat reporters have a severe case of Low T. This defense was top 10 last year with a busted up Leonard Floyd. Add Mack and they are probably a top 5 defense. Swing for the fences for Christ sake.

What age/year in the league do great pass rushers start to slow down?

If drafted by the Bears, 23.

The move has to make the Bears a playoff team otherwise it would not make sense. You are giving up future quality assets with the draft picks, and limiting payroll flexibility with the cap hit. And with a lack of depth on the roster already, it seems like a questionable move at best.

It all depends. Peppers had 11 sacks last year at the age of 37. In general I would say early 30's though. Mack should have 5 more great years in him.

Even if Mack commands 20-22 million, the Bears can go into 2019 with around 20 million in cap space by cutting roster dregs like Chase Daniel and Dion Simms. Because their QB is so cheap now is the exact time TO make this move. They never will have this chance again, if Mitch pans out.

If it only cost money, then I am all for it. The problem is, you have to give up a lot of draft picks too.

I won't complain if they did it, but I wouldn't pull the trigger myself.

This is starting to sound like the hand wringing over the possibility of sending Hinrich & Deng to the Lakers for Kobe.

I addressed the draft pick question as well..Pace will screw up the 1st rounder regardless.

Yeah you're probably right. I was just making the point that taking on a lot of salary and giving up draft picks is tough at this point. It is all opportunity cost- that money can be spent in the off season, and the draft picks can be used to get, cheap fresh talent. If the Bears were on the cusp, one player away, then I say go for it.

Nah, Reader has got this one wrong. Simple mathematics demonstrates that Mack couldn't have the transformative effect on the Bears that Kobe would have had on the Bulls. Apples and oranges.

There's a difference between being a player away and adding a new superstar talent to your team. Adding Mack would revolutionize them defensively and totally change the way Minnesota and GB have to prepare for the Bears. Lions too, but I'm not worried about them.

He was saying the trade isn't realistic. That is it.

But very true that Kobe would have had a bigger impact based on the number of guys on the playing surface.

That's not the way I read it. There were people who opposed the prospect of acquiring Kobe because the price tag was too high. Reader is trying to draw a parallel between that situation and the proposed trade for Mack. But the argument doesn't work here.

Mack would improve that defense by leaps and bounds. Which makes the offense less stressed and usually better. And frankly there is no fearful team in the division, and if they actually believed in Mitch, now is the time to take a shot.

Which also would bolster ticket demand for the family cash cow.

But I don't see this as a realistic trade either.

I don't think that Mack puts them in anykind of elite situation record wise though Mack is a stud.

I'd say that the Vikings are an elite team in the division. They could go all the way.

As a Saints fan, I don't really see one in the NFL this year. It seems as if every team has lost nice pieces, or just gotten older(old?) at key spots. I couldn't imagine betting on the NFL until week 5.

Big money QB has never won a big game, the WRs aren't any great shakes and the RB is coming off a knee.
