It would be so Sox to call a guy up for a handful of meaningless games and shut him down early while losing a year of cost control.

Ozzie, on the other hand, would have set up his rotation to ensure he made a start against the Cubs. Call it meatball but I like when the rivalry is fun.

But Ozzie gave A.J. the day off vs the Cubs

Does Rick Hahn's job rest on the shoulder of Kopech? Should it?

I think it does and it should. If Kopech flops Hahn should be fired. Problem lie in the timetable. Have to give the kid time to develop. Probably 2 years max. If this thing doesn't start turning around by next season Hahn has to be launched.

It rests on Kopech and Jiminez.

If they're bums, he's done.

I was all for the rebuild but you can't miss on the talent once you decide to do it. Moncada appears to be a bust. Early on Robert but he is injured all the time. Giolito isn't anything special Comes down to Kopech and Jimenez.

There's definitely a lot riding on Kopech and Jimenez but I think it’s too early to make a call on Moncada, Giolito and especially Robert. They’re still really young and have time to figure it out.

Robert looks really good. It's just a matter of staying healthy.

If Kopech and Rodon meet their potential the Sox rotation is going to start looking great very soon. Giolito may not have a spot even if he pitches to his maximum ability.

Any giving up on Moncada right now is ridiculous talk from people who have never had the patience to sit through a player's development.

Do you think Lopez has a better chance to stay in the rotation over Giolito?

I really can't tell right now. Both are so up and down (as to be expected from a rookie)

Guys with high strikeout rates tend to end with high strikeout rates. Its one of the more difficult things for a player to correct. That is a scary ass stat. Sort of like NBA players that start out as terrible free throw shooters. Rarely ever are able to correct that.

His issue seems to be not swinging and missing at strike 3 but taking it instead. If he becomes more comfortable swinging and doesn't hesitate as much, that could help.

He definitely needs to cut down on the strikeouts. I believe that’s possible with a better approach and that is something he can learn but a hitter can still be a highly productive with a high strikeout rate. Mike Trout won an MVP Award with a 26% strike out rate (184 total).

Moncada is probably not going to be the superstar talent we thought we were getting. Solid regular is not outside the realm of possibility, but he simply can't hit the ball enough to be
much more than that.

Does he have a change up? Guess not. Cuz he would have thrown one by now. If he gets a good change he's that much better. He could dominate without it. But I'm shocked the Sox didn't try to develop one for him.

Curve and slider are good.

Working on the change. It's decent, not like Sale's.

Fast ball looks too straight to me. So it's all 4 seamers. Needs to get a better 2 seame for some cut action.

But he's 22. Change and the 2 seamer can be taught.

If he stops throwing the 4 seamer he was as well toss it underhanded.

Don't want him to stop throwing it. Obviously. But you have to have both a 2 and a 4. Most great ones do. Seems like he's always 4 on the fastball.

Its actually a problem for him. He keeps multiple jerseys and changes throughout the game.

A little high? No. It's very high. 51 through 2. So we might only get 5 or 6 innings out of him today. Unless he can start getting some soft outs early.

Whatever. He's a little pumped today.

If he's great the Sale trade is a win even if Moncada sucks. But I'm not giving up on Moncada. Because we might have traded Sale for Sale. Only younger with more control.

No kidding. He's sweating like a rapist. And it's only 75 degrees. Once again, it's probably just the fact that he's jacked up.
