I’m not really sure how good he is anymore especially in Wrigley but best of luck.

He was better on the road this year. Pitched horribly at home.

Good move. His road ERA this season under 3.00. Hopefully Shitwood gets banished.

Oh goody; the last guy we got with that reputation has performed very well so far this year.

Cubs got money and only had to give away some unknown minor leaguers. If he's bad, who gives a shit. I think its a great move.

Now I hope they are able to somehow pry Scherzer from the Nationals.

This is a great move. You gave up nothing and got a guy who can take the ball every 5th day and at worse pitch better than Chatwood. I feel like they are going to be stubborn though and put Monty back in the pen and cite fatigue so chatwood can set the mlb career walks record in 3/4 of a season.

How hard is it to spells his name correctly? He’s been in MLB for like 13 years.

Not saying the Cubs are getting Scherzer, but one of the most interesting things to watch this trade deadline is do the Nats get far enough behind that they become sellers or do they keep going for it.

Come on guys. I can only get so hard for these rumors.

What if we get Scherzer and DeGrom?

Who would be left to play defense?

how is that optimistic? The Nats are teetering between buyer and seller. It's neither optimistic or pessimistic, just an observation on another team.

At this point, looking at the Darvish situation, Chatwood is a lost cause, Montgomery can't stay healthy, there is a very good argument for the Cubs to pick up Hamels option for 2019.

The buyout is 6MM, the option is 20MM. You're essentially signing him to a 1 year 14MM contract. It's probably going to make a lot of sense to just pick up the option. He's not as good as he's shown so far with the Cubs, but his combined Tex/Cub ERA is a flat 4.00. I'd take that for 14MM over the course of the season in 2019.

At the time of the deal Hamels was probably viewed as a rental, but keeping him around in 2019 might be the right call.

Barring a trade, they have to pick up the option.

This is not true. The trade agreement has the Rangers paying some or all of the $6M buyout, per reports. So if the Cubs decide to pick up Hamels' option, the Cubs are responsible for all of the $20M, not just a $14M difference.

I thought the Cubs would pick up the option barring injury from day 1. He was already a better option at #5 than any other pitcher on the Cubs. Next year, they will get to pick a rotation of:

Lester
Darvish
Quintana
Hamels
Hendricks
Chatwood
Montgomery
Smyley
Some younger guys in AAA

At least they will have some sort of depth to choose from. Unfortunately, no one jumps off the page as being dominant. At least there is potential there.

Ooof.

I forgot about the luxury tax implications also.

Fuck, they might still have to pick up the option at the full freight.

They will have about $26M to spend on arbitration players and pre-arb players if they keep Hamels. They should be fine. Bryant, Baez, and Hendricks will eat up much of that, but I think they will still be okay.

Not that Bryant was going to do it, but with that margin above, that all but eliminates the ability to buy out FA years unless the guy wanted something really back-loaded.
