that Palin choice is the black mark on his career. what a terrible choice. He didn't even know who she was.

You wonder what happens if Sarah Palin never gets catapulted to national relevancy.

He listened to his campaign instead of trusting his instincts. His instincts had allowed him to make a great comeback. Considering the economy had crashed it is very likely that a McCain and Lieberman ticket wins. Most voters would probably have preferred experienced hands on the wheel.

That choice is his rightful legacy.

A man who was too easily swayed by outside voices rather than standing on core principles.

There would still be some scattered hard-right austerity freaks, but without Palin as the movement's avatar, I highly doubt they mobilize enough for Republicans to take the House in 2010. Maybe they don't even get it in 2012, either. She was a perfect leader for people whose politics end at the lot line's edge.

I don't think a McCain/Lieberman ticket would have been enough to withstand, oh, you know, the utter collapse of the global capitalist order. No Republican candidate was going to survive that.

Palin had rightfully been killed as a political figure by the media before the election was even finished. She's a footnote designed as a Hail Mary by a group that knew they were going to lose who ended up not being up to the task on even basic questions. She is as important as whoever Hillary picked and lost with against Trump and I honestly don't even remember his name.

She may have stayed slightly relevant but people were openly laughing at her and the concession speech she gave. She mattered so little she didn't even run for President in 2012.

Then again, this is a board that has argued heavily about Abraham Lincoln not really being that great, and Robert E Lee not really being that bad, so I guess we shouldn't expect anything less from a guy who was simply a sensible Republican in a political climate that has less and less of those.

I seriously do not want to ever look up Palin again. What was the timing of the choice? Were they before the Dems convention and still afraid Obama might choose Hillary as VP?

Tim Kaine, and no, despite being destroyed by the media and losing handily, the aftershocks of her campaign resonated for years. Think of her more as a retarded Barry Goldwater.

Hillary voters were still on the fence and the belief was that an attractive female candidate would bring them over. Then the bottom fell out of the economy and very few trusted her being a health issue away from being president.

The Obama hate was going to happen regardless just like the Trump hate.

What was the most impactful thing Palin did more than 1 month after the election?

A very power voice for the Tea Party movement. She was relevant until the president took her place.

It worked: more Hillary voters defected to McCain than Bernie voters defected to Trump. Something like four times as many, if I recall.

Figurehead of the movement that undid a Democratic supermajority in Congress and has held control to this day.

That's true. Bernie voters stayed home or didn't select a president.

She did speeches to some hate obama crowds and then disappeared. She didn't even run in the primary 3 years later.

Like Trump, she is more a partially sentient, partially vegetal symptom of a growing white nationalist sentiment than she is a cause of it.

The major Republican donors wanted Palin. McCain capitulated as was his wont.

This is true. An enivtable side effect of #cancelwhitepeople becoming the major party platform of the Democrats was this rising tide in white consciousness. But she was still on the forefront of it, a lot of kids who made fun of her in 2008 are now full bore Trump supporters desperately trying to save white civilization from the brown horde.

It didn't matter who McCain's running mate was. The economy failed, you fire the head coach.
