My point is that if Nazi is seen as some irredeemable epithet then Soviet should definitely be the same. They are really no different. One side won and the other lost. Had western allies sat out the war somehow and Germany beat the USSR we would speak of Soviets now the same way we do of Nazi's. There's an argument even that the USSR was worse than Nazi Germany.

Not trying to defend either side, but even in this thread you see ltg using the "aw shucks Uncle Joe" propaganda that was remarkably persisted to the modern day. The USSR gets a pass. I have wondered why that is.

That is a separate issue from the U.S.S.R. and the role (Leading) that they played during WWII. Separate even from the Socialist ideology. Without the Soviets we wouldn't be celebrating WWII. Propagandists try and spin it (As MANY on here attempted to do) but it doesn't match up with the facts. Sure they would have struggled on American soil but the war wasn't fought on American soil.

I'm not arguing as to whether Stalin was a moral man. He wasn't. He was a ruthless, murderous piece of garbage that had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the war by Hitler. It still doesn't change the fact that without his assistance Britain, France, and the U.S. would have gone down in a blaze of Gun smoke.

You've got me thinking with this post. And I am going solely by my own emotions on the issue. Personally the Nazi's were so much worse because they started WW2, and the USSR was effectively an Ally in that war. Also, in terms of genocides, the Nazi's were quite specific in their targeting of a group, while the USSR was pretty broad. I guess if I really thought about it, you might be right in that they are no different. But it just feels like the Nazi's did more harm.

The Nazis were worse. They were hellbent on world domination and started a war to achieve it. Stalin was a danger to the countries located in his sphere of influence. If you happened to be located in Eastern Europe you were fucked but he wasn't concerned with conquering the world.

As I started thinking about it, I just don't know enough about the USSR to evoke strong emotions. Our conflicts with them were all via proxy with the ever present threat of nuclear war. But it never really escalated, so I can't hate the USSR in the same way as the Nazi's.

Hold up, bub--if you are comparing Germany to the Soviet Union culturally--and you can go all the way back to Kievan Rus and throw that shit in there--I'll put C18 and C19 Germany against the Russian entirety and, frankly, any other culture ever. Not even close with Rusland.

Well about 2/3rds of that beautiful German stuff was reduced to rubble. Berlin subway is...uh...not very discernible from its American counterparts. The S-bahn artery is still cool and the Hbf is a marvel though. Not beautiful like the Moscow subway, but a real masterpiece.

Not to mention they have actual cars on their roads, whereas in Russia you have the 2018 Yugo

I wouldn't say the Germans are loved in the former occupied territories, but in the Baltics, Poland, CZ, Hungary they are vastly preferred to the Russians. Again, we are led to believe the Nazi's are the ultimate in bad-guys but among the people who have lived through both it's not so universal.

Of course blue checkmarks who want to "seize the damn means" like to ignore this kind of stuff. They want it both ways. Hm, wonder why?
