There were some compelling ideas behind Armour Field, but from a gameplay standpoint, 280 down the lines and 420 to the alleys is positively nanners. You can't play modern baseball that way, no one would stand for it. It's best as a dress rehearsal for Camden Yards.

Just before Camden Yards, there was a neo-retro stadium built for Buffalo's AAA team with provisions for expanding it to major-league standards. Unfortunately, this was about the time that Western New York started hemorrhaging residents and would never be a viable major-league market beyond the Bills and Sabres (and even both of those were semi-recently in question), so AAA it stayed.

Simply turning The Cell/Rate around so that the back drop was views of the skyline and the Lake would have done wonders for the aesthetics of the place.

I think it was America that had the suggestion of covering one of half of the parking lots with grass, and have it be a park and picnic area. Fans could still show up there and tailgate, but then it would also be a park year round. The Sox could easily schedule off season or off day activities to actively get kids involved in being a Sox fan. It would be pretty cool to get off the Metra, walk for 5 minutes, then sprawl out on a blanket to have a few beers and a ready-made sandwich before heading into the park.

Northwest corner of 35th/Wentworth would seem like the place to do it. That would be a good idea. Just about anything's a better idea than surface parking.

Wonder if they could figure out a way to do a gameday-only stop between 33rd-39th on the Southwest Line, sort of a Sox version of the Ravinia stop.

This just makes too much sense. Build a staircase and a ramp with railings. It doesn't have to be as "nice" as the Lou Jones stop a quarter mile east. The trains already run during the week for day games, just put an extra
train on the schedule for night games. Then you run 1-2 trains at most on the weekend before the game and one 8-car train after the game on weekends. I know the SWS operates on freight lines, but you can't tell me that there is no way to accommodate a grand total of about 3 minutes worth of Metra trains on the 13-15 weekends a year the Sox have home games.

You're not supposed to go shorter than 325 feet down the lines. You'd need really high walls to compensate for the inevitable cheap home runs, like when the Dodgers had to play at the L.A. Coliseum. I like quirks, but that's too much.

Well, the article in the original post explains that Comiskey was designed to be similar to Kauffman Stadium, which in turn borrowed from Dodger Stadium, and both of those are still alive and kicking with significant renovations and year-to-year care. I suspect Comiskey has better bones than Turner Field or the Ballpark in Arlington, and infrastructurally speaking, the location can't be beat. They should be committing to staying at least another twenty years, but really should be there indefinitely.

A negative white sox article by Dayn with a y Perry? Shocked!

The stadium is fine. It's not great. I really like the wide concourses and short rows of the lower deck. The sight lines are excellent. Access to the park is convenient on multiple forms of public transportation and private. The food is great. The place is clean and looks new for a 27 year old facility.

It will never be some place for which they sell t shirts bought up by people who love nostalgic, Disney world preservation. However, it is certainly not an impediment to me going to a game.

This dead horse has been beaten enough already.

There's more to the success of Wrigley than it being "neighborhood" driven. It benefitted from other tailwinds of fortune that would not have existed with Armour Park.

There are aspects of Armour Park that would have been nice
CH is correct....the foul lines need to be at a reasonable distance
RR is correct...closer to Loop would have been a much better location.
FRANK is correct....rotating the field so the backdrop is the loop would have been an easy win.

It's one of Jerry's blemishes....but they did make it a ton better and it is a nice ballpark. I won't apologize for appreciating the fact that it has parking lots. I hate taking the red line to Wrigley.
