Rain delays did it

The injuries this year. Robert, Hansen, Kopech, Burger, Adolfo...like half the guys they had in the top 100, and a couple who were top ~20, are just gone. Only Adolfo salvaged some of his status. What they're left with just isn't enough. Maybe to come in 2nd place because the Twins have collapsed and the Tigers/Royals aren't really trying...but they aren't getting to .500.

The rebuild is over. It failed today.

They gave up Sale for nothing.

Khalil Mack needs to decapitate Aaron Rodgers tomorrow to make me feel better.

I expect he will return to having control issues when he returns to the point where we are almost back to square one with him like we are seeing with Hansen

like I said, even in his 1-2 starts, hitters did not seem overwhelmed with his speed unlike what I was expected to believe

Popular theory was they were holding him back. If they really just watched him lose like 4-5 mph off his fastball and didnt make anything of it...I dont know what to even say.

Kopech and Hansen are very different pitchers. I can’t blame Hansen’s control problems on an injury.

I agree. I never saw over 97 and assumed with everyone else that he was dialing it back (either his own choice or the team’s) for control.

So when does the league start investing in non-fireball pitchers whose arms and shoulders don't give out every other year? I realize breaking balls mess with your body, too, but can't they teach 'em to pitch?

Just happened slowly over time. My guess is the loss of velocity is exactly why the Sox started digging around to see what was up. Had he said something months ago its all averted but he just didn't know. I think the Sox minor league trainers are bad. His fate was probably sealed in AAA back in the middle of the summer.

Tommy John Surgery has become commonplace for pitchers, especially young flame throwers like Kopech, so while it was at first a shock to hear this it is not totally unexpected. It's very disappointing but he'll return, most likely spring training 2020 and he'll more than likely throw just as hard or close to as hard. Next year will be about Eloy Jimenez and how his bat can alter the lineup. Hopefully, next season Rodon can stay healthy the entire season and become the leader of the staff, Giolito shows improvement, Lopez improves and Moncada takes a step forward in his development. Next year perhaps we'll see the call-ups of Cease, Madrigal, etc., and they can add to the excitement that Eloy adds to the team.
