Just happened slowly over time. My guess is the loss of velocity is exactly why the Sox started digging around to see what was up. Had he said something months ago its all averted but he just didn't know. I think the Sox minor league trainers are bad. His fate was probably sealed in AAA back in the middle of the summer.

They must be bad. And why, if the Sox had doubts, do they bring Kopech up, but not Eloy? I get the financial stuff, but Christ, I want to see some talent out there help the try-hards.

Was turning into a nice second-half....

The MLB training staff didn't ask questions because Kopech probably told them he felt fine after every start (didnt want to seem like a bitch complaining about soreness) and the idiot Charlotte trainers didn't see anything wrong.

This same thing almost happened to Dunning and the Sox caught it. Almost by a miracle.

Injuries are one thing, but what the Sox suffered this year was beyond luck.

One pitcher at 200 innings, no one else even close

Owners offered players a 26th full season roster spot during the 2016 CBA negotiations. Players balked at the last minute due to the owners wanting to reduce September call-ups from a 40 man limit to 28. Both sides thought they'd find a way to add a regular season roster spot before the next CBA in 2021. I think you'd need to go 28 for the full season to make bullpen games work for an entire season.

Bernstein has to be stroking it like never before. He was on last week I believe and they were talking about Kopech and he brought up.......wait for it......his son. He said he was watching a game with him and asked him for his analysis of Kopech. He said he is an injury waiting to happen. Dan must be so proud that his kids analysis was spot on.

Didn't BigFan once offer to donate funds to Bernstein's favorite charity if Bernstein could go a week without mentioning his kids? Vaguely recall paypaling BF $50 for something along those lines.

Bruce Levine was on and seemed to think that was the case. He's on the 40 man, so they'll have to put him on the 60-day DL for all of next season.

If the kid knew in his heart late in his Charlotte run that he tore it and was going to miss 2019, and just gutted it out so he'd get recalled and earn the extra year of service time the hard way, that's a brilliant motherfucker.

Really, the Bears have to be great these next 3 years or Chicago sports are just going to be too depressing to even think about anymore.

It was guaranteed to happen. Now’s as good a time as any. At least not the shoulder like Jason Bere.

They should make him go to a black surgeon for the TJ.

My idea back when they were talking about that was go to 28 on the roster to cut down on the Iowa Shuttle stuff, but:
- 3 inactives per game (probably all starting pitchers), 2 inactives on DH days and in September
- max of 11 active pitchers per game, 12 in September - active pitcher defined as somebody who pitched at least 3 innings in their last 30 non-DL days at MLB/AAA/AA.
- everybody is active at the start of the 14th inning

True. Looked like an overhyped Kyle Farnsworth to me. I still have hope but damn this is fucked up.

Tommy John isn't the deal killer it used to be.

That is sad. The inning I saw him pitch was pretty fun. Best case scenario is a post-op Liriano and even that would require a Faustian bargain. Heh.

He's young and should bounce back but 2021 is when he'll be fine. That first season after surgery usually isn't good.

I always thought these elbow injuries were catastrophic, unmistakable, blow outs. Is it possible to require reconstructive elbow surgery after not even knowing you injured yourself?

I’ve always been curious why pitchers don’t have a monthly mri done to track changes to the shoulder and elbow. Spend a million dollars install one in the stadium and just have it as routine scan.

I’m curious if a dr could detect damage as the ligament is degrading if the player isn’t provided honest feedback.

I don't think anyone would want that. Every pitcher has wear and tear in their elbows and shoulders. A pitcher could feel normal then get a checkup and the Dr could say "oh my god that looks terrible you can't pitch like that" and recommend surgery. Who knows he could have pitched another 5 years like that. No one wants to actively seek out to have surgery.

Does anyone know if his service time started already. If so, I want Hahn fucking gone it was damn near a fireable offense bringing the guy up when he did rather than either earlier in the year or next year. Now if he is both hurt and on the clock that guy has earned his ticket out of here
