I feel like the media making excuses for her behavior is a fairly recent development. I don't remember these kind of defenses for things earlier in her career and recall the foot fault incident against Clijsters being subject to widespread ridicule (and she was arguably hated even more before that during the 2000s). If anything I suspect some of this is partly an overcorrection from some of the same people who were largely ignoring her continuing to rack up majors while declaring Ronda Rousey the Greatest Female Athlete Ever.

That "award" ceremony was horrible. I can't believe anyone tried to spin it as Williams being gracious in defeat.

The winner was apologizing for winning. Hell, even the event head said it was the wrong result. The crowd is booing.

Serena has a history of going off the rails when she is losing a big match. But she is also correct to insist that there is sexism in the officiating. (In general there is little consistency in when rules are enforced.) There is also inconsistency in her defense, however, in that her coach admitted to sending her a signal while she claimed that her team does not have signals.
