While thousands of people struggle to overcome the damage left behind by Hurricane Florence, citizens in Wilmington broke into the closed Family Dollar Saturday on Greenfield Street to steal anything they could find.

WECT reporter Chelsea Donovan arrived Friday to find dozens of people carrying items back to the public housing community Houston Moore.

"When we came over the hill on Greenfield Street, you could just see people everywhere," Chelsea Donovan said.

Donovan and another WECT employee walked to the front entrance and back exit of the store at the intersection of Greenfield and South 13th Streets, witnessing people wearing masks and carrying out various items, including paper goods.

What Donovan didn't see was law enforcement and there's a reason.

Wilmington police sent out a statement Saturday afternoon that they were told by management of the Family Dollar to stand down after receiving reports of looting at the store.

I hope the insurance company refuses the claim.

Management probably figured that the cops shooting someone outside the store is worse business than just giving away the inventory and arguing with the insurance company.

Yeah, worth it to lose the hundreds, maybe even a thousand dollars worth of inventory for.

That one guy is 9-feet tall so I'd probably let him do what he wants.

They need some good ole boys to be sworn in as deputy sheriff and start target practice. There is no reason for this type of third world shot in this country.roll up with a squad unit and some guys with shotguns and Billy clubs and haul them all away.

One more thing, next time one of those "community" organizer/activist complain about why no one will invest in these communities just show them some pictures of this and what will be sure to be Gaza levels of mayhem in Chicago after the VanDyke trail concludes.

Yup.

It's a shame nobody took some target practice on him.

Strange seeing a registered individual of a certain class call out behavior of others. Some, maybe even MANY, might very well have similar sentiments towards him and his associates. Seems imprudent to cast aspersions in this instance.

Looks like that Family Dollar is a repurposed shuttered CVS/Walgreen's type store. So the neighborhood already drove one retailer out of business to have it replaced by a down-market purveyor of cheap chinese crap. They'll be po'd if Family Dollar pulls up stakes and leaves the area.

Noticed driving around the backwoods of the south that you'd sometimes come upon (gross) brand new Dollar General stores a mile or two or more outside the city limits of the nearest town. Nothing else around. Wondered why they chose to site their stores away from the town centers. Maybe it's a LP technique. Figuring folks with access to cars are less likely to shoplift/loot.

Probably has everything to do with the cost of the land.

We had a County Market grocery store and a Dollar Gerneral just down the street close in Urbana because more merchandise was walking out of the store than was being checked out at the register.

I dont know why this keeps happening in the richest country in the world.

Looting is wrong, but somehow i can understand WHY there is looting.

The system is broken. And nobody cares.

At least nobody died there.

who uses liquid laundry detergent still? About 2 mo ago my neighbor gave me these laundry pods. I've been using them since. They're so easy. Just drop them into the machine and done. No time wasted measuring and pouring into the laundry machine.

ya never had that urge. i heard the kids do that. pretty stupid.

because of the laundry pods i discovered dishwaher pods too. So easy. They clean your dishwasher too. the really good ones. Cascade Platinum I think is the brand. First time I used it, it not only washed the dishes so clean, it washed the whole dishwasher immaculate. Haven't gone back since.

I’ve been to that County Market before. The guy waiting behind me was getting impatient and started yelling that I was a “milk-buyin’ motherfucker” - quite loudly.

I had 4 items.
