Unless you grew up in Indiana, it's where you go when you didn't get into Illinois.

Like this is a controversial statement.

I never had an interest in Illinois. It is a good school though.

Purdue has lower admission standards then Illinois. It's a good fall back school though. I would guess graduates with similar degrees have similar outcomes.

I love Purdue. Most of my family went there. I enjoyed teasing them about admission standards though.

That is a strange thought. I never applied there. Admission standards mean nothing if you don't want to go somewhere.

There is nothing strange about it. Purdue is seen as an option for people who don’t get into Illinois, especially for Illinois students. How would I know your inner thoughts on college choice?

Many people choose it over Illinois and many choose Illinois over other schools. Its certainly not where you go if you didn't get into Illinois. I'm sorry if your family had to settle on it after not getting their first choice. That must suck.

I've never heard of Purdue being the alternative to Illinois.

If you are going for in state tuition that would seem to be ISU or UIC.

If you are going because you love the idea of being a big ten frat brah, it seemed to me that Iowa was the choice.

Yeah, for potential Ivy Leaguers.

Yup. I was shocked at how many of my graduating class ended up there. It was like a Calc B/C reunion.

And when I went there, tuition was only $5,000 per year for in state.

If you're not taking almost a decade to get a liberal arts undergrad degree for SIU-C you're just doing it wrong.

One of my professors, who clearly doesn't take things too seriously, took time out of class to show that scene and then make sure we were all aware that Joel in fact would not have been admitted to U of I with his grades/scores.

The nice part about UIUC was, at least when I applied, a certain ACT score and GPA basically assured your acceptance so for people who were applying for the Ivy’s or some of the more selective schools did use it as a safe school. Pretty sure I remember a formula on the application but it’s been 26 years so, like on many things, my memory is a bit foggy on the details. I’m told it’s a bit more selective these days than it was early 90’s though. Benefit of being born in the mid 70’s birth rate lull I guess.

Yes, they had a sliding scale thing back in the days. It was something like a 27 ACT with a 3.5 out of 4.0 GPA. As your ACT score got higher, your GPA could be lower and vice versa.

Purdue should use that for a testimonial quote on one of their recruitment brochures.

The saying in Champaign always went:

If you're thinking about attending Purdue, Purdon't.

Never heard that.

We've been going through the university selection process. I highly recommend use of the DOE's college Navigator tool. Specific to this discussion, if you plug in ACT score ranges for local schools, you will get these schools that all fall into similar ranges:

UIUC
Purdue
MSU
Marquette
IU

There are a few others, but we basically did a search within a certain range of Chicago. As such, Purdue and Purdon't seem to be similarly rated.

Here is the thing, Purdue makes it easy to get into, but then creates some of the toughest standards for achieving grades once you are there. While it seems most schools are employing grade inflation, Purdue proudly avoids that and instead creates classes which are designed to weed out students.

I can't speak to that, so it is interesting to know. I am merely talking about admission standards. Being as objective as I can be, I would put Purdue and Purdon't in exactly the same bucket in terms of reputation in the employer world.
